Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

I feel so proud of my country. Like honestly proud. The match was tense and oh my god the atmosphere. I don't know what to say and it's gonna talke a while for this to sink in. I had a listen to radio sport last night after the game and people (men) were phoning in crying and expressing their pride.

As for the match itself, I think the kiwis slightly dominated although the Bahranian's did show moments of brilliance in attack. Make no mistake though, this was a match new zealand deserved to win.

We had the better of the chances in the first half with killen hitting the post and Jaffa making a save from (i think it was) Smeltz's header. We deservedly took the lead when fallon headed in from a beautifully stuck corner and the crowd went ballistic. Our best chance of scoring was always going to be from set piece situations. And i seriously believe our set piece play is world class material as we showed against the world champions, Italy not so long ago. It was at this point i realised that reaching south africa was a reality.
Bahrain came out firing in the second half and won a penalty when whitehead chopped the legs of one of the bahrain players. There was a deadly silence around the ground and probably accross the nation and i think there was just an air of inevetibility about it. I mean what with the failure of the Football Kingz and the Knights and the failure of NZ soccer in general over the last decade. Anyhow, once the penalty was awarded, the bahrain players were celebrating as though they'd just scored a goal. And i think it placed a lot of pressure on the penalty taker who hit the ball softly to Paston's right as paston collapsed to the floor nicely and smoothed the ball. Save! As a goalkeeper, i know it can be difficult to stop low balls close to your body and paston's reaction to drop quick when penalty's usually require full stretched saves was absolutely fantastic.

The remaining 40 minutes were intense and i couldn't keep my eyes off the tele. I had to tell my sister to shut up about ten times so that i could concentrate. We defended like heroes. I remember one of the bahrain players taking a shot just outside the area on about 70 mins and two new zeland defenders, nelson and sigmund just leapt at the ball and succesfully blocked the shot.

When the final whistle blew i just felt so proud; so patriotic and i've never felt this way before about New zealand. I mean we do well in the rugby, rowing, cricket and of course we won the league world cup but it's just not the same as soccer. Soccer has something about it that really drives the passion i dunno maybe it's just me.

My player of the match would have to be vicelich. I thought he had a very solid game at the back and supported nelson well. When a defender is having a quiet game, it mean's he's doing a good job and certainly vicelich positioned himself very well and made some crucial clearances.

Agree - we were very lucky to get away with a draw in the first leg, but we fully deserved to win the second.

I cracked up every time the commentator referred to Jaffar as "Jaffa". Header was from Fallon.

We are indeed awesome at set pieces - it's the combination of Leo Bertos' amazing accuracy and the huge size and heading ability of our players. It's just a shame that set pieces are the only way we can score.

Locchead. This isn't Stoke City.

I got that same feeling of inevitability - I picked a 1-0 loss before the game. So glad I was wrong.

Haha, dumb cunts. On another note, Bahrain's diving, especially at the start of the first half before they realised they'd actually have to play some football to win the game, really fucking annoyed me. It just makes me extra glad they lost.

Not just you bro. I haven't felt this way about sport since...ever. Ever in my life.

Fair enough, but I'd give that particular accolade to Paston.

I agree that it has become a really ugly part of the game. But Bahrain were under immense pressure to win this game. They were eliminated in similar style at the world cup 2006 qualification and would not have wanted to bow out in the same fashion a second time. This is no excuse for all the diving they did but i am sympathetic of their circumstance. It was good to see the New Zealanders playing true honest football.

So true. I spoke about the game to a couple of guys from work today and we all agreed that it was the biggest sporting moment we've ever experienced. Not even milan's victory over english magots liverpool in the 2007 CL final was anything close to it.

Looking forward to the world cup in south africa, I seriously believe new zealand has the potential and the belief to steal some points from their opponents. It is unlikely that they will progress further than the group stage although if we get drawn against teams like gunea and north korea it will be very interesting. But regardless of what happens in SA im pround of the lads and proud to be a kiwi.

The saddest thing about it all though is that FIFA probably wont have the same "road to the cup" which made it much easier for us this time for future tournaments or did I read that wrong somewhere? Kind of feels like a charity invite.

Yeah you read correct. Fact is, NZ had it really sweet in qualifying for this world cup. Win the oceanaia group (very easy) and then play two legs against the 5th best asian team. When teams like portugal and France could miss out and sweden have missed out it really puts things into perspective. Sweden's exit means we'll miss seeing the likes of ibrahimovic at the world cup and instead we'll get to see wait for it......Leo bertos.
Having said that, this is a "World" cup. If we were to give all the high ranked teams an easy path it would really end up being a "European and South American" cup and would kill the development of the game in other areas. I think it's important that we have teams from all continents and NZ fills the oceania spot.

It will be very interesting to see how fifa change the design of the oceania qualification next time around.

Well said boob. Rumour is they'll put NZ into the second round of Asian qualification, which I think is the group stage (I could be wrong). This is when there are 10 teams left and they're divided into two groups. Top 2 from each group qualifies; 3rd place from each group will play off for the last WC spot.

This will mean it will be way fucking harder for us to qualify. This truly was a once in a lifetime opportunity - the easiest road to the Cup any team has had in modern times, and maybe ever will have again. On the plus side, changing the way we qualify will give us a lot more games against quality opposition, which is a good thing for the cohesion of the team, the development of the game in NZ, and also for spectators (provided they play them on fucking free TV for once).

Also, so-called big teams like Sweden, Croatia and Czech Republic didn't qualify because they failed to finish in the top 2 places in their groups. They can't blame us for that. Europe has enough places.

That win over the UAE champions is fucking insane. We now play the Mexican champions, and the winner of that plays Barcelona. Barcelona! We have no chance against the Mexicans though. But yeah, NZ soccer explosion - I thought the same thing.
