Its not surprising that the tsunami has killed more females than males. Typically men are stronger than women physically and that woul be even truer of these countries affected by the tsunami.

It sux that the women are being subjected to physical, sexual and emotional abuse but I am not that surprised considering the countries it has happened in. Countries that oppress women.

I just can't believe the womens' attitudes to it, do they not know anything?

They probably don't know any better. Like the article says, any prospect of being housed and looked after (even with an older widower) is better than being alone and helpless.

Its not he rules that make them opressed, its the people. If they really followed the rules/system they would realize the equality/respect given to women, both sexes for that matter.

Alas, in practice thats not how it happenes and the country as a whole gets a bad image not to mention the system they follow... why , because of "some bad apples" who have influenced others.

Yes thats true but the women dont' know any better because they are never told any better therefore control goes to men.

Well, then its up the women to stand up for themselves[1], however having said that its not easy for this to put in practice with out support of their men.
The Tsunami disaster, should make them realize this and I hope they learn from it.

1)Now i'm in no way blaming women here

liz_shaw - March 27, 2005 03:10 AM (GMT)
Yeah thats all very well and good to say but when these women are at risk of being raped or otherwise abused how the hell are they supposed to stand up for themselves.

Also people who grow up in that sort of a situation are often really timid, weak and let people walk over them.

what are you suggesting?

liz_shaw - March 27, 2005 05:58 AM (GMT)
I'm suggesting that outside forces need to intervene in order for women to have more rights.

Fez - March 27, 2005 07:51 AM (GMT)
Lol you mean like a personal bodyguard for every woman?

deprecated() - March 27, 2005 07:52 AM (GMT)

No, I mean that another country intervenes (peacefully of course) in order to democratise the country and give equality to women.

which country are we refering to exactly cox i haven't read the link yet????

liz_shaw - March 27, 2005 11:05 AM (GMT)
I think it was Sri Lanka, I read the article yesturday, yeah it was Sri Lanka.

This reminds me so much of Iraq with the disrespect and lack of equality for women.

Sarey - March 27, 2005 07:58 PM (GMT)
I think it's interesting how the western world looks at places like these and goes into fits because it's not equal blah blah blah. Well in reality it's still not equal here either. Women still get paid less etc.

These women don't know any better, and it's a culture they've grown up with. How dare we go in and tell them they're wrong.

you know what they say,

"if it aint broke, dont fck with it"

Women get paid less because of the following reasons.

Women take time off to have children so whilst the men are being promoted the women are at home.
Women also don't care as much about money as men do and are more likely to look at other things in their employment.

So I don't think it is fair to say that the workforce isn't equal.

Sarey - March 28, 2005 05:32 AM (GMT)
I think that's a bit of a generalisation Liz. Househusbands are becoming more common and women are caring about how much they earn.

I'll be the first to stand up and say that as a female, I care about money and I want to earn a shitload of it. And if in time I have children, I'll be going back to work.

liz_shaw - March 28, 2005 05:48 AM (GMT)
yeah see money isn't important to me, I would much rather be doing what I love.

In those countries though the women stay home to look after the children. I'll agree that in New Zealand the trend is changing.
