Title: Anyone Want To Sell Me A Bass?

Fez - June 14, 2005 01:49 AM (GMT)
Just wondering, my friend and I are starting a band (for serious this time)

And since we already have a very good guitarist Im looking to take up bass.

Problem being I dont have one, I have a guitar, but no bass.

Anyone here have one perchance?

Steveo - June 14, 2005 07:59 AM (GMT)
I'm your man, but you're going to need something bigger than a practice amp for a band. When I was in a band (oh the memories :P) we had a 120W valve amp and it wasnt enough, you really need a good loud solid state (not sure about bass guitar amps). Got a drummer by chance?

templar34 - June 14, 2005 08:40 AM (GMT)
I'm keen for a bass too :P

But amps are the expensive bit.

Steveo, how in the hell was 120W not enough?!?!?!?!

Steveo - June 14, 2005 09:09 AM (GMT)
Yeah i know :S, come to think of it might have been a 80, it was a lot anyway.

Crappy amp then. Try Vox, they make wicked ones apparently. I have a crappy little 30W Gorilla amp for my eclectic guitar.

What kind of music do you guys perform?

got singers? :ph43r:

Steveo - June 14, 2005 09:29 AM (GMT)
It was a Marshall Valve state

p.s ill ask about the bass tomorrow fez

Woot cheers Steve

We are planning on playing Punk/Ska, me and Teh Chris will be the singers, Ive been in a band before and have written some of my own stuff and even have recordings (I have the MP3s), Im not a massively good singer, but me and Teh Chris plan on alternating. He will play Sax/guitar, we have a drummer, and my mate Si is a fucking awesome guitarist, the only problem is he's a massive Westie Metallica freak so hopefully he wont mind that we'll be playing mostly punk/ska, I mean I dont mind busting out the odd Metallica song every now and then, everyone likes Metallica :D

I play bass in a band. Bass is fun. I've never played ska, but I've seen a fair few ska bands and they have some really cool basslines.

I'm not selling my bass but you can pick up some half decent ones for cheap both new and second hand. Mines a Karina P-bass ($400 new) and I've had it for a year and a half and it still suits me, while I want something new, I can wait. The money is in the amplification though I just bought a new amp @ $1600

I'm selling a peavy tko 80 watt solid state 15" amp if your interested. I could let it go for $350 - It's pretty loud.

maniacnymph - June 16, 2005 03:33 AM (GMT)
oh yes, you definitely need to keep that sax player on, ska is awesomo.

hahahahahah I have 1200w RMS in my car and that isnt enough!

Happy Ahmed - June 16, 2005 07:28 AM (GMT)
hello 4ohms.

kiwi_hockey_guy - June 16, 2005 07:41 AM (GMT)
and what?

Happy Ahmed - June 16, 2005 08:00 AM (GMT)
V=IR
P=VI

Hence P=I^2R

In car audio, where speaker resistance is very low, you will get a lot more power output in an amplifier. I wouldn't be surprised if the 1200W RMS is at 2 ohms.

The equivalent in home audio (8 ohms) is therefore 1200/4 = 300W

They are probably also quoting this as a mono amp, so divide that by two and you get 150W / channel.

I am not sure what ohmage musical amplifiers run at, but I suspect it is 12 or 16.

The morals of the story: I am smarter than fucking everyone. And the two amps you are talking about are probably of very similar power output.

kiwi_hockey_guy - June 16, 2005 08:16 AM (GMT)
who said I was running 2 amps? and I am amazed by your electrical knowledge

Happy Ahmed - June 16, 2005 08:21 AM (GMT)
The two amps being the guitar amp and your car amp.

And yes, I am too.

Steveo - June 16, 2005 08:29 AM (GMT)
Car stereo's are all quoted in max output not RMS, it always cracks me up when the kiddies come into work and go "woooaaahhh 1200W sub woah!"

Happy Ahmed - June 16, 2005 08:38 AM (GMT)
Not necessarily. The PMPO rating is often quoted on gay little plastic stereo systems though.

My stereo is fucking rad.

JoshuaZahn - June 16, 2005 08:58 AM (GMT)
Wattage is bollocks for stereos, amplifiers, car subs whatever. Its just something that marketers use to try to get people to buy amplifiers.

What you should look at is it's decibal rating before it starts to distort and over what frequency range. Also the speaker configuration and load as well as pre-amp are all important. Wattage is just how much power is used, not how the power is used.

But above all it has to *sound good*

kiwi_hockey_guy - June 17, 2005 02:08 AM (GMT)
that is RMS steevo

Steveo - June 17, 2005 06:19 AM (GMT)
Good boy.

Joshua: Try telling that to the kids who buy the stuff
