Title: Easy Papers
Description: let other forum goons know

Fez - May 26, 2005 03:04 AM (GMT)
This thread is sort of like an insiders guide to those easy papers that arent really papers at all, the kind you dont really have to show up to lectures for and are just there to fill some extra credits, or fill an elective for further interest.

For me, I was told this one by many others and Im so glad I did it.

Stats220, I dont have to show up to lectures at all, and the assignments take me half a day to do; its nothing to do with stats giving a brief crashcourse in HTML, XML, CSS, PHP and R.

A must for any budding programmer doing a BSC or BCOM(with infosys) and needing to fill some extra credits.

Ahhh lazyness. It's not a vice, it's a virtue, because it encourages us to find new and inventive ways to avoid work.

* Any introductory paper where you've done its equivalent in 7th form. For me that was maths 102 and stats 101. Should've done a macroeconomics paper in hindsight.

* Physics 107: Planets, Stars and Galaxies. I did it in my first year, hadn't done any physics since 5th form, got a B+ just by reading the recommend parts of the textbook, which I liked reading anyway (and because I found it interesting, I was able to read it quickly, unlike material which I find boring). No 'study' as such, unless that reading counts, and it also helps that my sister had done the paper earlier so I could use some of her old assignments :D. Goes to show that if you find something interesting it sticks in your brain. My friend who had done physics up till 7th form put in the same amount of effort I did and got an A-/A/A+ (I forget which).

Fucking good for naps too. Lectures are around the middle of the day (unless that's changed), the theatre is warm, quiet, and there are pretty pictures on the OHP.

* Compsci 111: I've never done it (it's mutually exclusive with compsci 101) but I understand it's a cake walk if you are at all competent with computers.

* Philosophy 101: Introduction to Logic. Boring but easy. Unfortunately I was really tight for time when the 3rd test rolled around (the paper was split into 3 tests, no exam) and only got a B, but I maintain that if I'd had another 2-3 hours to study I would've got an A (I was doing pretty well up till that point, about 95% average for the first two tests IIRC).

* The introduction to Buddhism paper is apparently fucking easy, I don't know what the number is though (Theology 1xx I guess).

* Papers which overlap material from papers you've already done are a good idea. Physics 102 & Physics 107. Infosys 220 & Infosys 222. Infosys 224/329 & Compsci 314. I learnt Dijkstras Algorithm four times.

Fuck I should've done that, I already knew all those languages to some extent (except R).

Sardonic - May 26, 2005 03:44 AM (GMT)
According to the Alternative Calendar the easiet papers are Philosophy 105 Critical Thinking and Philosophy 101 Introduction To Logic. Unless u can't do maths.

Anyhow define easy.

the oob - May 26, 2005 03:50 AM (GMT)
I would have done a Roman history paper but I had pledged to get through my degree without writing any essays. I'm too concise to write arts essays... although that statement is rather ironic given how I blather on in my posts on this forum.

Jaded Mandarin - May 26, 2005 07:48 AM (GMT)
Definitely Philosophy 105 - oh my God, good to see that rare A+. Stats 10x and Maths 102 are spoon fed too so they're easy as fuck. I don't see what the point is in doing them unless of course you're trying to raise your GPA for entry requirements to a certain programme.

Yeliah - May 26, 2005 08:27 AM (GMT)
Ooh ooh. Intro to Metaphysics is piss easy. I think it's Phil 100. As is...Um, I forget the actual number, but it's a Politics 100 level - Politics and the Media. Boring as fuck, but easy as shit. :D

templar34 - May 26, 2005 08:31 AM (GMT)
I went to a Maths 102 lecture on my first day.... said "fuck this" and asked the lecturer which was the next hardest.

CompSci 101 is a piece of piss, if you can think.

And as far as I know, things like French 102 are about 5th form level, so if you're at all able to study/understand languages, they should be easy.

I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who wants an easy grade, it's a fair amount of work.

AC la - May 26, 2005 09:11 AM (GMT)
ECON101 :P
2 tests and 1 exam only..
and the exam is even plussage -__-

The stuff they teach is (apparently) quite easy. I've never done any economics at high school yet still find the tests a bit on the easy side.

The streams were 120% full at the start of the semester (people sitting on the steps), now the lecture rooms are like 30% full...

Steveo - May 26, 2005 09:35 AM (GMT)
Yeah ECON101 is a piece of piss :D

ACCTG101, if you have done accounting before will be very easy.

i am doing physics 107 next semester too. oh god i might meet fez. teh scaray.

metaphysics, phil100 - was so damn easy, i studied for 2 hours on the day, had a coursework average of just under 50%, didnt go to half the lectures and walked away with a B-

Anthro100 omgwtfmostboringcourse ever, but dead easy with half attendance and NO attention to any readings. studied off the lecture powerpoints for 2hours. C.

JoshuaZahn - May 30, 2005 06:10 AM (GMT)
A warning about Phil 101. It is easy, but only if you have a scientific or mathmatical mind. IE anyone taking compsci will find it a piece of piss.

Phil 105 however is really really easy and doesn't involve maths.

I found that quite hard, but I had never done any compsci before....Its a bit of a joke giving it a stats title.

maniacnymph - May 30, 2005 11:29 AM (GMT)
English 121, didnt realise its the bum english paper when i enrolled, basically, if you can write, you do well. if you cant write, you can still pass. theres nothing to learn. its like 5th form english, only much easier. but the tutorials are quite cool, you get a point for doing a fast-write (which is, you get a topic and write whatever comes into your mind, fast-ly, for about 10 mins). awesome.

as is music 101 ( ? ) basic music techniques, which i naively (sp?) enrolled in, thinking that although it includes the word 'basic' in the name, it would be challenging for a person who only took 6th form music, with a teacher who taught us on less than 5 of the days in the whole year. i was wrong. it is piss easy. 'is this a plagal or interrupted cadence that im playing?' 'what interval is this -major 2nd, or perfect 5th?' melodic dictation=auld lang syne. *cough*.

ftvms 100 (?) the one you have to take in the first semester.

kittenslayer - May 30, 2005 12:51 PM (GMT)
Mandarin (If your from Mainland China) :hilarious:

samf - June 6, 2005 08:30 AM (GMT)

Sociology 101. Boring as hell, badly organised, and basically any assignment including the right words (in any order) gets good marks. A+ easy, even with almost no study - plussage and a 2 hour exam. I'd do my whole degree in that department if self-respect was not an issue.

Hell, it's not even that hard if you aren't, just takes a bit of time each night learning characters... and the grammar is pretty simple compared to English. Or so I think. I do have a Mandarin exam on Thursday so don't call me any kind of authority yet...

templar34 - June 14, 2005 12:06 AM (GMT)
Regarding Stats 220...

It's just offered S1C right? And would you recommend it, ignoring the fact it's easy?

back in the days for both 120 and 150:

Dont even know why these papers are part of a CS degree or an IT for that matter.

only attended about 4-5 Lectures(including the test days), almost all the labs and managed to get away with a pass.

Ive seen past exams for 2nd sem too, but I took it this semester so I guess its only 1st sem.

Yeha I still reccomend it, it can actually teach you shit, if you actually show up to lecture and dont fall asleep because you already know it all.

maniacnymph - June 14, 2005 01:57 AM (GMT)
fuck me, music 100 ( actually maybe 101?) was easier than 6th form music. (maybe 7th form too, i dunno, i didnt do it). i did one year of music in highschool, and found it incredibly easy. yayyyyy :)

do they teach you how to use turn tables :)

Eco 101..I Dont know what was up with the test....

Steveo - June 14, 2005 07:53 AM (GMT)
Man, if u want an easy paper take econ101 A++++

El Matador - June 14, 2005 09:53 PM (GMT)
As easy as writing your name in the snow..

maniacnymph - June 14, 2005 10:59 PM (GMT)
well last time i went to the snow i was 2 months old, so to be on the safe side i think il pass on that and take pysch108 instead :(

the oob - June 15, 2005 06:32 AM (GMT)
I tried to bum my way through psych 108 and got a C-, as opposed to the ~B+ I got for my other bum papers.

lowkey - June 21, 2005 11:02 AM (GMT)
Almost all the recommendations here are for 100 level papers. Aren't these by definition easy? An easy stage 3 paper is Phil317 (I think) - Ethical Issues in BioTechnology. Two essays, pretty easy topics. The exam is identical each year. So, just need to pick two topics to know and memorize essays for the exam.

Otherwise, Phil264/364 - Phil of Social Science is pretty easy as well. Although I have the exam tomorrow morning so we'll see. Boring lecturer though. So, I never really went to the lectures.

Sorry, all I can offer is philosophy recommendations. I only take philosophy papers.

maniacnymph - June 21, 2005 11:20 AM (GMT)
ugh, i cant stand the whole memorise-essays-for-exams. dont need to anyway, being just naturally brilliant of course, but thats beside the point - memorising essays is just so fucking tedious.

Hauser - June 26, 2005 02:32 PM (GMT)
Definitely agreed: in cases where essays can be memorised, it sucks, because you have people like us who can't be bothered doing it, and you have people who actually can be bothered, thus ownage can occur in the exam.

Sam will back me up on this one: Chinese 100 is not a bum paper. I sort of cruised for about half the time, and had a very rude awakening a week before the exam, realising that I needed to learn a shitload of Chinese before it to even scrape a pass.

samf - June 27, 2005 06:20 AM (GMT)

Yup - that one demands some effort. I didn't even bother with learning characters for most of the semester, but pulled myself up heaps so the exam felt ok (but time will of course tell). Having a Mandarin-speaking girlfriend & several other acquaintances probably helped me a lot - in terms of already knowing roughly how the grammar worked and what it sounds like in conversation.

I knew it wouldn't be a cakewalk though, but if I wanted one I would have stuck with Stage 1 History. :)

Fez - July 18, 2005 03:35 AM (GMT)
Ok which one of you goons is doing Phy107 this sem too?

Turns out our goalie from my hockey team is in the class too, we always seem to take the same papers, its weird

Do compsci then :P. I got through my entire degree without writing a single essay.

(yes I know this reply is a month late).

From my sisters experiences, I don't recommend doing a language as a bum paper, unless you're already somewhat competent with that language. Do Physics 107: Planets, Stars and Galaxies instead, it's easy, even if you don't know any physics (I hadn't done any since fifth form). Plus you can borrow the book from me... I would sell it but it's my sisters, who's in aussie, so meh.

OTOH, knowing a bit of Spanish would probably be more useful than knowing a bit of astronomy.

I am doing international business so spanish will be far more useful - and i will never take a physics module.
