Title: The Schapelle Corby Saga
Description: Is she guilty?

Fez - May 12, 2005 11:17 PM (GMT)
QUOTE
Corby, 27, is accused of smuggling 4.1kg of marijuana into Bali on October 8 last year and faces life in prison if found guilty.

I dont think she's guilty, just a victim of being in the wrong situation at the wrong time.

What do you guys think?

the oob - May 12, 2005 11:20 PM (GMT)
I would say innocent, but my dad made a good point about this: how could you not notice you were carrying an extra 4kg? Now I'm not so sure.

Depends on for instance the weight of the the surfboard. You'd notice 4 kgs on a 1kg back, for sure, but would you as easily notice if 4kgs were added to 8? Who knows what she was doing prior, if she had been water ski-ing (just as an off hand example) in the couple of days before, and her muscles were still aching or sore from unacustomed exercise, she would probably not think 'ooh this feels heavy, someone must have stuck 4kgs of drugs in there'. In fact really how many people would notice extra weight and not put it down to some kind of subjective anomaly ('oh I must be tired today, the weathers getting to me, feels like my bag weighs a ton')?

the oob - May 13, 2005 08:49 AM (GMT)
Oh I didn't realise she had a surfboard, that's different then.

Anti-Flag - May 13, 2005 10:18 PM (GMT)
If she's guilty. What a dumb bitch.

I keep getting mocked by my ASSie mates telling me the bulk of Kiwi news isn't actually Kiwi unless you include sports. ...i'm starting to notice it too. I don't mind this, as not much happens here but i'd prefer world news and a lot of it. With Australian in small doses.

Fez - May 13, 2005 10:38 PM (GMT)
I think its become a "saga" of sorts because we can all relate to it. If shes not guilty something like this could just have easily happened to any one of us.

Thats pretty fucking scary.

Anti-Flag - May 13, 2005 10:42 PM (GMT)
Yeah i know. My folks go to Thailand a lot and they're always paranoid about these things. So they check everything carefully. You're right, it could happen to anyone.

Booyacka - May 24, 2005 10:55 PM (GMT)
I have a feeling the judges are determined to convict her no matter what. The whole thing seems to have become a media circus, most likely because Corby is a young, attractive Caucasian, and I really feel sorry for her when I see footages of paparazzis swarming around her with bloody cameras.

After John Howard writing a letter to the judges and being politely turned down, the Indonesian Government may convict Corby just to make some stupid point that they're not Australia's bitches and they'll do whatever they goddamn want to do. . :( ..Just my tuppence...

And where's the UN in all of this?

the oob - May 24, 2005 11:06 PM (GMT)
I hear on the radio that Australia is planning to do some prisoner exchange thing, in which case she'll be put in a presumably more comfortable Australian prison, and probably with special attention and accomodation by the guards.

Booyacka - May 24, 2005 11:10 PM (GMT)
That sounds good, but it still means she'll be put in prison for a crime that seems to have no definite evidence, at least from all I've been reading in the media.

the oob - May 24, 2005 11:19 PM (GMT)
Australia should issue a travel warning to Indonesia: "Warning, a kangaroo court may execute you for carrying dope".

Yes, yes it was. *hangs head in shame*

samf - May 26, 2005 06:02 AM (GMT)

I was thinking about this today. Why would someone in Australia stash 4 kilograms of dope in someone else's luggage (presumably at her house or at the airport), when they know it'll probably be drug searched on the other side? If they're trying to courier it, how would the person collecting on the other side find it? Is there a market for Australian-grown weed in Bali? Doesn't quite make sense to me.

Yet from what I've heard Indonesia is currently conducting an utterly vicious war on drugs that actually earns that name - one where they essentially judge its success by the number of dealers killed, rather than the weight of drugs interdicted. Surely not even an Australian would consider bringing so much dope into a country with Indonesia's reputation.

kiwi_hockey_guy - May 26, 2005 06:07 AM (GMT)
I know they often do that (drug smugglers) they will stash some drug on a persons luggage, they know they will be searched and caught. While this is happening most of the resources are tied up with the offender other people can bring in other drugs usually of a higher street value........ So loosing $5000 worth of weed is nothing when you can get in or out $150k if cocaine.....

But i dont get why you would be taking the drugs to bali......... maybe coming back but not going there.....

They're probably following the same principle as Mexico-US border drug smugglers: send heaps of people across knowing that only a few will be searched. The drugs that are found are simply a business expense.

kiwi_hockey_guy - May 26, 2005 08:15 AM (GMT)
Exactly...........

the_lost_dinosaur - May 26, 2005 09:47 AM (GMT)
Sadly for Corby, no one has ever been let off drug charges by this particular judge - so the best case scenario is that she gets extradited to australia and then serve out half of the original sentence in an australian prison...all in all, she should be out of jail by the time she is 75.
If I were the australian government, i would stop giving aid to indonesia completely.

the oob - May 26, 2005 09:48 AM (GMT)
They should fake her death in prison and give her a new identity.

El Matador - May 26, 2005 10:08 PM (GMT)
If she gets transferred to australia, is she eligible for a Howard Pardon?

Space Monkey - May 27, 2005 04:01 AM (GMT)
She's been jailed for 20 years, quite a long time.

:frustrated:

They better keep fighting against this, this is just so fucked up.

Space Monkey - May 27, 2005 04:50 AM (GMT)
I reakon oz should send in some secreat agents and free her, that would rock!

El Matador - May 27, 2005 06:37 AM (GMT)
It strikes me as ridiculous that any court could accept someone would intentionally try to smuggle 4.1 kgs of cannibis into any country in such a crude way, let alone one with drug laws like Bali.

Steveo - May 27, 2005 06:44 AM (GMT)
I agree

the oob - May 27, 2005 06:50 AM (GMT)
Pretty young women should not be behind bars, they should be in bars. It's a disgrace.

Exactly. Would this have been such a big media issue if Corby hadn't been so sexy?

the oob - May 27, 2005 07:22 AM (GMT)
Probably not, but it takes some chick with a big rack to point out how much the Indonesian judiciary sucks, so be it.

I move for a retaliatory carpet bombing... simply because I like the phrase 'carpet bombing'. Would they happen to have oil in Indonesia?

Zoot - May 27, 2005 07:28 AM (GMT)
Why, yes. Yes, they do. And many other natural resources.

So they've got oil, and terrorists, and muslims... hmmm.....

Lovely oob, lovely

Zoot - May 27, 2005 07:33 AM (GMT)
If marijuana was legal, people wouldn't have to smuggle it.

However, they've got a government that's very, very subserviant to US interests, so don't expect any disarmament invasions any time soon.

Iraq was fairly subserviant too once upon a time.

You know, that's what I like about the U.S. They use you and give you arms when you're of use to them, then kick you to the curb when you start to piss them off. Now the world is full of Americas 'battered wives', I find it highly amusing. Indonesia's too fucked up to keep themselves from pissing off the U.S for long.

Yep, and it didn't get invaded back then.

Fucked up in what way?

the oob - May 27, 2005 07:49 AM (GMT)
Well they locked up the Bali bombing guy for 2 years and locked up a pot smuggler for 20, that's pretty fucked up. I'm sure there are other reasons, but quite honestly I'm really just going by my western 'muslim countries are retarded' view of things, which has worked well for me in the past.

Then again they are a republic, so it's unlikely they'll be invaded any time in the forseeable future.

Domestic problems only become reasons for US military intervention when they affect US economic interests. Nationalising oil companies would be a far faster path to invasion than unjust judicial practices.

El Matador - May 27, 2005 08:04 AM (GMT)
Its curious. Indonesia and Australia are really where east meets west. Mukhlas got off bloody lightly, but only because the Indonesian government knows they couldn't control terrorists if there was an uprising. Look at JI.

I suppose it's a case of not wanting to admit the rot is coming within, so they blame the Western World. Indonesia is not a land of sunshine and candy, and I hardly think Western Culture, and specifically, Shapelle Corby should be held responsible.
