Title: Greenday

Steveo - March 23, 2005 06:18 AM (GMT)
I know most of you will try and tear my head off for this but

THEY ARE NOT THAT GREAT

this is just my little rant, if i hear one of their horrible 3 chord songs again......

oh the drummers ok

Fez - March 23, 2005 06:25 AM (GMT)
Lol ok I think the only person youll get rebutting your arguement is me, or Liz.

All I can say is a sold out show and a grammy award cant mean they are bad.

Steveo - March 23, 2005 07:58 AM (GMT)
pffff what does a grammy mean these days???

As for the sell out show, just shows how many 12-14yo girls there are in auckland

deprecated() - March 23, 2005 09:18 AM (GMT)
Did you catch "Fab life of hiphop super stars" on C4 - Monday around 9ish ???

Man--- i tell ya ... If i could, i would be a rapper instead...

Actually I was at that concert and it was NOT all 14-16 year olds, it was actually more like majority 16-26. And I was very surprised to see so many older people sitting around me.

Grammys are still a big deal, Id like to think Zach Braff was well deserving of the Garden State soundtrack award.

Worldwide critic aclaim for a concept album that has never been done before (at least not as well) cant be all bad either. You should listen to the whole album, its like a Rock Opera.

liz_shaw - March 23, 2005 12:07 PM (GMT)
Exactly, it is a rock opera. I really like the tracks wake me up when september ends, homecoming, american idiot and give me novacaine.

I too was at the concert and it was mainly 16 - 26 year olds and there were plenty of guys there, hot sweaty guys, who thought it would be cool to squish people so that they almost faint.

It was a wicked concert, Billie Joe sure knows how to get a crowd exited, an unforgettable moment would be when Billie Joe got three guys from the audience, they got to play up on the stage and then one of them got Billie Joe's guitar.

Green Day did heaps of their old songs such as minority, time of your life. They also did a cover of we are the champions.

it was a very good concert.

I think the reason you say you think they aren't that great is because they have gone more mainstream, who the fuck cares. their music is excellent.

dragonorchid - March 23, 2005 01:49 PM (GMT)
It was a good concert. B)

I also saw lots of older people...

Steveo - March 24, 2005 02:14 AM (GMT)
i dont care if they are mainstream or not, as fez knows i listen to a huge variety of music (jazz to post hardcore), I do however feel that Greenday has taken advantage of the whole America issue but thats another argument. I am a person who prefers more technical music though, and Greendays 3 chords dont do it for me. Now the new Mars Volta album..... theres a good album

Fez - March 25, 2005 12:33 AM (GMT)
Lol Im also going to flaw your 3 chord arguement and say "Holiday has 4 chords on its opening riff"

liz_shaw - March 25, 2005 12:44 AM (GMT)
Yeah I am also going to have to point out flaw in your argument.

Your comment about Green Day taking advantage of the USA issue is another thing to talk abut all together and you imply they shoudn't be doing it. along with this you imply that it is alright for the average citizen to have a problem with america but when it is a famous band you exclude them for it. It is no different.

green day are regular people with regular opinions who just happen to make music.

Honestly, have you tried listening to their new album?

Steveo - March 25, 2005 06:00 AM (GMT)
yes i have heard their album and as i stated its nothing magical. Yes it can be catchy. They have been hyped beyond belief, and there are many bands that are anti America, they are just a bit more subtle than "American Idiot" :|

liz_shaw - March 25, 2005 06:20 AM (GMT)
Yes but think about it, american idiot has done much better than their last studio album, warning.

Also, excuse the pun here but the album strikes a chord with many people, boulevard of broken dreams can have many connotations, so too can holiday, as well as nobody likes you (though that could also be about George Bush), give me novacaine is something many people can relate to, those who use drugs.

it isn't about whether or not their music is catchy, it is music from the soul in my opinion and Billie Joe is brilliant at writing, singing and performing as a whole.

Steveo - March 25, 2005 08:02 AM (GMT)
:P lol pun excused, and yes it has done far far better than "warning", its a huge success. But in the end its down to the individual. All music is "from the soul" (except maybe hip hop :P ) Obviously you (who is obviously an avid fan) will never agree, however I do have to admit that they do have talent (well some anyway), like I said before its not my thing. And its annoying how everywhere you go its pushed in your face...

maniacnymph - March 25, 2005 09:07 AM (GMT)
Greenday are my idols. American Idiot cd was a tad disappointing (as in, very disappointing.) it would have been a GREAT cd for almost any other band, but i really had expected more from them. and about the whole 12-14 year old girl thing, yeah, i have a little sister and her and her friends have decided they like greenday coz of american idiot, as have many other young'uns who recently have jumped on the bandwagon. but most fans (dedicated fans who will stick with the band for the rest of their lives) come in the form of people like me, and my older brother and his friends. that is because GreenDay are simply one of THE greatest manufacturers of brilliant beer-drinking songs.

maniacnymph - March 25, 2005 09:08 AM (GMT)
although, i know someone who has seen billie joe naked-aparently, he has a small dick :(

liz_shaw - March 25, 2005 09:29 AM (GMT)
that's not surprising considering how tiny he is. He would probably be my height I reckon, or just over, 165cms at the most.

yeah the 14 year olds will get over it shortly. Hopefully.

THeir song minority is like my life song. It is my mantra, I love the song nobody likes you, its so funny but seems really familiar, like it has another part of another song in it, does anyone know what sample it has?

Sarey - March 26, 2005 09:16 AM (GMT)
I agree that Green Day can be somewhat repetitive, but most of their songs I quite like. I own Dookie, Nimrod and International Superhits and while I got sick of American Idiot very quickly, I appreciate the new stuff too.

To be honest, Green Day just bring back memories of screaming Basketcase on a smelly old bus on school trips back in 3rd form.

liz_shaw - March 26, 2005 09:51 AM (GMT)
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I have two green day albums, american idiot and international superhits, I did have warning a few years ago but wasn't really a fan so sold it. That was a mistake.

Sarey - March 26, 2005 09:52 AM (GMT)
It's a good thing really, those were interesting days to say the least.

Its wildely thought that in the great context of the American Idiot Rock Opera storyline (which seems loosely based on Armstrongs life) that Give Me Novicaine is a metaphor for Suicide.

liz_shaw - March 27, 2005 11:51 AM (GMT)
thought the album was based on september 11, I mean there are the tracks st jimmy, wake me up when september ends, american idiot, letter bomb and jesus of suburbia that fit in with this.

Sure some tracks could be referring to Billie's life such as Homecoming, give me novacaine, holiday, boulevard of broken dreams,

Rock n Roll Girlfriend doesn't fit in with the album at all but then again it isn't written by Billie.

maniacnymph - March 28, 2005 02:45 AM (GMT)
"i pledge, allegience, to the underworld" ---- i tormented my homeroom with that song for the whole of form 4!!! bloody hard to find correct tabs to it, if anyone can tell me where to find them i'd be really appreciative!

liz_shaw - March 28, 2005 03:54 AM (GMT)
go to www.therockfactory.net there should be someone on that forum who can help you with that.

maniacnymph - March 29, 2005 08:07 AM (GMT)
oooh! oooh! i shall! im quite excited!

Steveo - March 29, 2005 09:56 AM (GMT)
damn that sounds familiar, what song?

liz_shaw - March 29, 2005 09:58 AM (GMT)
Minority which was released around about 1999.

Its not the number of chords, its what you do with them.

John Lennon has written songs with a single chord and it worked then...

brentmeister_general - April 16, 2005 12:50 AM (GMT)
I was at the concert too. Too bad Simple Plan were there. Wank wankity wank wank. The mosh pit was average, too many little 12 year olds, but still a great gig.
And Somerset opening was awesome, if there was a god, Simple plan would have played first, with Somerset opening for Green Day.

smiley - April 18, 2005 02:03 AM (GMT)
Summerset were awful. Simple Plan were okay but what bugged me is that they do the same set at every single concert, it never changes so there is never any element of surprise.

Green Day were wicked.

templar34 - April 18, 2005 02:29 AM (GMT)
Let me put it this way:

For that style of 3-string power chords, there is NO-ONE else who can pull off songs that effectively. By that I mean that the lyrics work well, the band meshes together well, and Billie Joe doesn't get caught up being a wanker on lead guitar.

Who were the contenders for their Grammy? U2 and The Killers?

Stiff competition for a band that "suck".

And for a pop punk band to have been around for how long? 15 years or so? They were called Sweet Children at one point...

And last I heard, American Idiot was a criticism of post-9/11 America, withe the American Idiot = G. W. Bush.

Wake Me Up When September Ends... September was the month of the elections and the associated BS.

So, I'm not saying that they're the best band in the world, just the best at their style of music.

samf - April 18, 2005 10:03 AM (GMT)

I loved pretty much all the songs from Dookie. Which is funny, because I didn't buy it for ages, and picked up a cheap copy of International Superhits instead. I didn't really like any Green Day since the Dookie era until I sat down and had a listen to American Idiot.

Subtlety be damned, Green Day still basically sound as fun and stupid as they did in the early 1990s. The songs were never innovative, but Green Day are fast, gutsy and skilled musicians. I think American Idiot was what Billy Joe and the rest really wanted to say when they got all 'political' with Warning (which I hate).

It's much more biting lyrically than anything they've done before, but they still rock out just as much as ever. Come on, you know you all loved it, before someone told you What Good Rock Music Really Is (supposedly)...

smiley - April 18, 2005 10:10 AM (GMT)
There is no such thing as good music or bad music. People listen to different music at different times depending on their mood.

I believe that music is subjective and better phrases to use are:
"popular music"
"unpopular music"
"underground music"
"mainstream music"

samf - April 18, 2005 10:14 AM (GMT)

My point exactly. Hence my attempt At Ironic, Not-Really Taking It Seriously Capital Letters.

Liz, are you chasing me from thread to thread for a reason? Or are you bored on a Monday night too, and just hunting me for sport? :)

smiley - April 18, 2005 10:19 AM (GMT)
Yeah I got home from work about 1 hour ago. I am lsitening to the radio, working on a politics assignment, and chatting on the forum. I do pretty much everything on my computer. It can't be good for my health.

I am hunting you, once I've killed you, can I eat you? :hilarious:

yams - April 18, 2005 10:25 AM (GMT)
maybe it WAS because someone or myself told me what good rock music really is, but when international superhits came out, i still had greenday in fairly high regard.

I heard American Idiot for the first time on radio, at the time i didnt know that its was the new greenday song. On first impressions, it came across as another cliche "punk" song jumping on the back of the political wagon (by then political songs were as common sheep on a farm). So it was kinda disappointing to learn that it was actually Greenday's latest work.

Now if there werent so many pop-punk bands around these days, Greenday would prob still be doing fairly well. But with so many clones around, Greenday havent really be able to re-invent themselves, to set themselves apart from the crowd. Kinda like Command and Conquer Tiberian dawn and Tiberian Sun i guess, it was more of the same old, cept that it had already been done to death.

Please, consult my girlfriend first. Mounting me on your wall may be more appropriate under those circumstances. May I recommend mahogany for the plinth? It was a great favourite of mine in life. I'd like to believe I don't yet count as 'big game' but I have never been blessed with a very high metabolism, and you never know what people are really thinking about you, right?
