Title: Ask Dr Steve
Description: A CraccumForum only piece
Fez - March 21, 2005 10:29 AM (GMT)
Fuck Te Atatu Stu, Fuck Dr Phil, we have Dr Steve, this guy knows the answers to all your questions! Who your ex-girlfriend slept with, why your dad eats paint chips, probably the answers to your quantum assignment due tomorrow...
So step on up, dont be shy, ask Dr Steve

yo DOC, whats with the curses!!!
I can assure you dont have any reason to be jealous of that Dr Phil, now prescribe me weekly dose of those nice herbs so I can relax my pain -- ya :-)
Fez - March 24, 2005 11:44 AM (GMT)
Dear Dr Steve
Ive noticed that whenever I enter the North Western motorway at Pt Chev, or exit the North Western at Westgate, theres this weird brown tarmac as opposed to the normal black and it smells like burnt wiring.
What the hell is that stuff?
Dr_Steve - March 24, 2005 12:01 PM (GMT)
The Jewel of India, in order to decrease operating costs, uses the cover of darkness to secretly dump leftover Chicken Korma onto the North Western Onramps. Several weeks of Korma have congealed, now it's just like tarmac, not that it ever tasted any better.
Fez - March 24, 2005 12:13 PM (GMT)
Ok but what about the smell?
Dr_Steve - March 24, 2005 12:17 PM (GMT)
have you ever smelled week old Chicken Korma?

you should be jealous of Dr Phil, I love the guy. He gives out great advice.
dragonorchid - March 25, 2005 02:04 AM (GMT)
who's Dr Phil and Dr Steve? Although the chicken Korma on the road notion sounds plausable and makes me want to chunder...
I think there should be an "Ask Liz Shaw" column  it would make life so much more interesting. p.s I'm not trying to insult you, it's just that the only reason i ever look at cracuum is to see what she's come up with this week ( I might be joking... hmm, maybe, maybe not). :P
I have a question of Dr Steve though, which may change my mind...
We pay course materials fees, but all our handouts and assignments are placed on cecil so that we have to spend more money to print them out. Why do we have course materials fees? and why havent they decreased since we dont' get things printed/photocopied and handed out to us in classes any more?

dr phil is an american psychologist with a tv show.
An ask Liz Shaw would be very interesting. I gave out some shocking advice to someone today.
Nah you aren't alone in only reading Craccum to see what I come up with. That is the only reason I ever read it too.
Dr_Steve - March 26, 2005 12:55 AM (GMT)
Wow! and modest too, Liz! ;)
Dr_Steve - March 26, 2005 12:58 AM (GMT)
Well I think that us being double charged for handouts is probably due to a miscommunication between the lecturers and the management, although I must say that I haven't experienced this problem.
All the classes that I have ever taken except one all gave handouts in class, most of them leaving extra ones in a box. This semester I even got a coursebook for free. Most of my handouts don't appear on Cecil at all, which is probably because most science lecturers are alergic to it.
What faculty are you in? maybe that has something to do with it.
Whatever you do to try and get the materials fees reduced probably won't do anything, because that would involve the university getting less money. You could try making AUSA aware of the problem.

you got that semi correct, i've had better quality at reasonable charge.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 12, 2005 05:56 AM (GMT)
Hey Dr Steve,
Why do people get lint in their belly buttons??????
As a Dr, i'm sure you will know this.......
Dr_Steve - April 12, 2005 07:28 AM (GMT)
Its actually a displaying mechanism just like Pinnochio's nose. The more you lie, the more lint you get.
I have no lint of course B)
Steveo - April 12, 2005 09:31 AM (GMT)
Dear Dr Steve
Why does everyone hate engineers? :shrugs:

Cause they f%*&@%g deserve the hatred <_<
Jamz - April 12, 2005 03:26 PM (GMT)
i'm sorry but no one will ever be as cool as Te Atatu Stu. even if Alec and Stian most probably just made him up.
and that bum that supposedly turned up and wrote for craccum, thats awesome too.
thats the stuff that keeps me reading that magazine. love it.
Toby Turner - April 13, 2005 12:32 AM (GMT)
i cant dig that templar.
stereotypes are for first years and high school. im not offended, i just think its pretty dry balls.
Happy Ahmed - April 13, 2005 12:54 AM (GMT)
Technically, I'm an engineer and I should find that offensive.
However I don't.
It's fun to make fun of engineers. Half of them are virtually illiterate and can't reply in writing anyway.
The bum that turned up to write is real.
Te Atatu Stu sucked ass.
As did Octopus thing.
I should start my own advice thread. I am awesome.
Fez - April 13, 2005 01:19 AM (GMT)
Te Atatu Stu is made up, but Alec really does a back fence in West Auckland that he throws shit over.
We're not trying to be like Te Atatu Stu, this is the original advice thread, all others are just pretenders.
Happy Ahmed - April 13, 2005 01:21 AM (GMT)
Why is this site registered in Tokelau?
templar34 - April 13, 2005 02:28 AM (GMT)
Well, regarding engineer bashing... I'm a Physics/Computer Science student, and I'm surrounded by either people who dream of LEDs and inductors, or guys who think World Of Warcraft is an actual religion, with real influence, so I'm no better off than most engineers
You could in fact say that I'm a wannabe engineer, since I do virtually the same stuff.
But engineers work too hard, and I'm fundamentally lazy, so I didn't do a BE.
I don't attack engineers personally, I just attack the stereotype. Since no engineer I have ever met comforms to the stereotype, my insults haven't as yet applied. I have quite a few good friends who do engineering of some form or other (mechatronics  )
So hopefully that lessens your disgruntedness and contempt towards me.
Toby Turner - April 13, 2005 02:33 AM (GMT)
no contempt. im surrounded by turd engineers. i just find the 'lets bash an engineer' stories repetitive. in fact, all department stereotypes are boring.
templar34 - April 13, 2005 02:48 AM (GMT)
Stereotypes ARE boring. Real people are much more interesting.
The humour for me is in considering stereotypes as caricatures, with everything taken to the extreme. i.e. LLB/BCom students being money grabbers, Computer Science students living on a keyboard and mouse, and ELAM students being screwed up.
I guess my immaturity shows through in being able to still laugh at such silly puerile things.
Happy Ahmed - April 13, 2005 02:53 AM (GMT)
I can laugh at a well drawn cock'n'balls for hours.
Toby Turner - April 13, 2005 02:54 AM (GMT)
Dr_Steve - April 13, 2005 10:10 AM (GMT)
Wow, my thread finally gets busy and I'm not even here to see it
Aaron_von_Cock - April 14, 2005 01:41 AM (GMT)
I'm an engineer too but I think the stereotypes are hilarious. As are penises. And poos. And cum. Teehee
I would like to see an electrical engineer being pooped on. It's either low brow humour or possibly sophisticated art.
smiley - April 14, 2005 03:02 AM (GMT)
here is a question for you Dr Steve, why is everyone telling me that I should do a radio course and take a semester off from university? And what do you think I should do?
Dr_Steve - April 14, 2005 11:59 AM (GMT)
I could definately see you as being a good talkback host.
Whether or not people agree or disagree with your opinions, Its pretty undeniable that you have a talent for starting debates. And I'm sure you would enjoy debating with people on air.
It would also be a good springboard into politics - its a great way to establish your name outside of the university, and you could develop a following before you ran in an election.
I would recommend finishing uni before you go into politics though - the more educated a politician is, the better.
smiley - April 14, 2005 12:08 PM (GMT)
That is something that I am honestly frequently being told, it is always "get into talkback, get into politics", I mean I started getting on air at a young age too. I am a media and politics geek, more than most people I reckon. I ring ZM and newstalk ZB and yeah I want to make a difference in this country, so far so good.
Debates are excellent. What did you think of my new thread "election campaigns have begun"? In particular the wording, it sounded a bit like a commentary in my opinion.
I have actually been marked down in uni assignments for commentating too much. It is just in my nature to do it.
Imagine if I hadn't been on captive, how different would my life be? I was doing advertising before that. I can't see myself doing that.
Should I also delve into the singing industry? I can sing, I am so confident around everyone and everything. Live life to the fullest I say, I don't wanna wake up at 90 having not siezed any opportunities.
I am going to finish my degree, 1.75 years left, and then I can do the radio course.
Its all decided now, thank you steve, you rock.
templar34 - April 14, 2005 12:13 PM (GMT)
Oh. My. God.
After that comment on singing.... I may never listen to ZM again, for fear of hearing a single by..... smiley :o
Dr_Steve - April 14, 2005 12:59 PM (GMT)
I did like that thread. It summed up Nationals education policy well. I certainly don't like NCEA as it stands now. I'm not sure about abolishing school zoning, but this isn't the thread to discuss that.
I didn't notice anything wrong with the wording, but then I tend to write quite academically myself. I'm sure that thread will stir up some debate ;)
and by all means explore the singing. I would recomment trying to write a few songs. If you can write poetic lyrics, it could be another way of getting your voice out there. Just be warned, musicians have had a long standing reputation of leaning toward the left.
smiley - April 14, 2005 01:58 PM (GMT)
I would love to release a single to be honest, it would be a rap single. I write all the time. I wrote a poem/song lyrics today. Here they are:
Don't be afraid (nothing to fear)
I'm hanging for the day
when he will be fine
and feel the same way
that I do
so many questions I want to ask
but am afraid of the answer
CHORUS
maybe some day I'll have the courage
but for now I"m wondering how
and wondering when, why and where
coz he keeps running hot and cold
and I'm thinking the worst
CHORUS
I wanna ask him out
I'm afraid he'll say no
coz its happened before
and I've been let all alone
crying for a guy who won't be mine.
The chorus is:
Don't be afraid
There's nothing to fear
Don't be afraid
It will be alright
Don't be afraid
Don't be afraid
there's nothing to fear.
I think this is my best song that I have written. I had the idea in my head on Wednesday but hadn't found the time to write it, I wrote it this arvo.
Yeah, for further political debating check the campaign thread, and thank you for the positive comments.
I know that most people in the creative industry are left wing oriented, i am always defying conventions, its a way of life for me.
El Matador - May 20, 2005 08:46 AM (GMT)
Greetings Dr Steve
A month ago I got episodes 4,5 and 6 of star wars on DVD. But I hear there's going to be a nine disc box set out in November! Should I off my current Old Trilogy or hope that the New trilogy get released separately?
Regards
sloanie
Dr_Steve - June 7, 2005 11:41 AM (GMT)
woah shit! I forgot all about this thread.
Well Sloanie, a boxed set there will be. George Lucas wouldn't miss another chance to whore the hardcore fans out of 60 bucks. I would sell your set to some newbies on trademe now, and get the full set at the end of the year. (if you can stand not watching it between now and then)
