Title: Watering Holes
Description: ...where to drink, connoisseurs...
templar34 - April 14, 2005 12:24 PM (GMT)
Alright, just thought we might need a thread on where we recommend people to drink (drink for flavour and atmosphere other than for sake of drunkenness).
Top of the list is, of course, SHADOWS. Nuff said.
The OCCIDENTAL, Vulcan Lane is good if you want to sample some Belgian gourmet beer, however it is a tad pricey ($6.5 for a 300mL glass of tap beer). Wonderful atmosphere and food.
O'CARROLL'S, just next door to the Occi, is a very nice place for a quiet pint of Guinnes or Kilkenny ($6? a pint).
BAR 3, Skycity, is basically the Loaded Hog's older sibling, with nicer decor.
LONDON bar, Corner Wellesley and Queen, apparently has a *HUGE* selection of beers form around the world, and they also have some wicked live jazz.
BROOKLYN, across from the cinema complex on Queen, has good value beer ($7 for a pint of Amstel, or Montieth's, or Export Gold). *VERY* nice venue (have just been there, so pleae excuse any grammatical errors - I blame the piss).
Anything down at the Waterfront. Meh. Sure you all know about this stuff.
GOLD, Ponsonby Rd, classy cocktail bar, lovely Cosmopolitans ($15? a pop I think).
That's all I can think of in my hazed state. Feel free to contribute.
/edit
HONEY, nice little bar on High st with comfy booths, according to my flatmate. Intimate atmosphere.
ELBOW ROOM, Durham St. Our local boozer. $5 Amstel handles (30cL), good staff, funky atmosphere, and usually have live DJ on Fridays.

probably the waterfront, the kings arms, grand central and shadows are my favourite bars/pubs/clubs to go to.
Steveo - April 15, 2005 08:43 AM (GMT)
I have yet to goto the waterfront
Fez - April 15, 2005 11:13 AM (GMT)
you dont want to, unless you want to be hit on by 40+ year old men.
smiley - April 15, 2005 11:22 AM (GMT)
The Waterfront Pub is actually one of the better ones.
Another cool one is the playhouse in aotea centre, it is an Irish pub, usually go there after work with co workers, its excellent.

Shadows for day to day drinking.
Deschlers / Rakinos for slightly interesting beverages.
However the single greatest place for drinking in the city is the Mercure Hotel - Vertigo bar.
13 floors up. They have my credit card details so I can walk in and not have to bother paying. They have the gretaest views of eithe rthe city or the harbour, and they have free bar snacks.
Pure awesome.

Wow, Fez, now I know where I recognise you from...
BTW that was a *terrible* shirt you were wearing. I wouldn't have gone home with you unless you'd bought me a lot more drinks. At least another 4.
PS It's good to see that people are actually reading this thread and *contributing*. That's what it's all about. It's like a shared lunch of places to get pissed. Now if you'll excuse me, my phone's charged, so time to go back out and keep drinking

Shadows of course for casual drinking.
Rakino's is good for a bit more class for middle of the ay or any other time drinking. Dechlers and most places on high street do good cocktails.
I have to say Clarie Inn on Dominion Rd is pretty good, it's close to my flat, standard drink prices, guiness and BIG meals for about $10-15.
Aaron_von_Cock - April 17, 2005 05:05 AM (GMT)
I'm off to Rakino's tonight for some good wine and good jazz. Sunday best is always good for the atmosphere
acrowley - April 17, 2005 05:42 AM (GMT)
The Dogs Bollix, Galbraiths or The Cock and Bull at Ellerslie, just near my offices :)

Last night I went out to some pubs that I do not normally go to. The pubs were Chic down at the viaduct, it is very different, quite classy.
Then my friend and I went to Coast bar, that was awesome, also classy, has two levels which is quite cool and its a wicked place to meet people, even just as friends.
Steveo - April 21, 2005 06:53 AM (GMT)
I went to Globe (hot backpacker chicks  :D ) and Float, was lots of fun :naughty:

There's a new place on victoria street just up from whitcolls, starks I think it's called. Some friends of a friend rented it on tues and well it sucked because hardly anyone showed up but the venues really nice. really big and spacy, comfy couches good dancefloor, cute bargirls.
I think it would be really great if it was packed. Drinks were a bit pricy I think i payed $8 for a shot, $7 for normal mixers. But maybe I'm just too used to Shads prices :)
Anyway pretty good venue, I'm not sure what music they play normally but it was hip-hop and R&B kinda stuff on tues.
El Matador - April 21, 2005 11:12 AM (GMT)
Kilala - Mission Bay - Above Oportos
Not bad, drinks are cheap, the patrons are dodgy and some Friday Nights are dedicated "russian nights". Just plain wierd.
But yea. Great spot.
Yeliah - April 24, 2005 05:38 AM (GMT)
Shads. Rakinos. The Supper Club.
Jamz - April 27, 2005 12:05 AM (GMT)
argh i HATE the hog, float and viaduct riffraff... waterfront bar is the only one that i can stand around that part of town.
London bar and murphys are probably the only two downtown that are really anygood.. only been to parnel once and they were playing the worst techno i had heard in my life in everysingle bar. go figure. :shrugs: Walked through Ponsonby once on a friday night, some places round there looked cool.. have to be kinda selective tho
globe is... ok if you have 6 or 7 people and can claim a piece of the floor... but sometimes thier music mixing is crap.. must depend on the DJ
yeh i think london bar has to be my fav...
for rugby watching: horse and trap in Mount Eden or the castle up top of Symonds Street
Zoot - April 28, 2005 10:35 AM (GMT)
Globe is the shittiest, worst, filled-with-fucking-morons, fucking-angus-morons-for-bouncers, meat-market piece of shit on the planet. It's barely a backpackers bar. It's where people went after Leftfield died and when they get kicked out of Margarita's.
Shadows is good enough, naturally, plus the AUSA-subsidised beer is good (Monteith's on tap yes). London is good for talking if the band isn't too loud. Stark's has excellent cocktails and service (the usual bar manager is more or less the best bartender in the city), but it costs a whole bunch. The Occidental has awesome food and great Belgian beer. Rakino's is like London in that it's good if the band isn't too loud. The Met is good for dancing, as are Lenin or Coast depending. And the Playhouse has good cheap food and bad covers bands, and Christians playing music in Aotea Square some nights.
I called noise control on them, but they said that it's not a residential area and the Square is controlled by the Edge complex and stuff.
El Matador - April 28, 2005 09:22 PM (GMT)
Haha. You Scumbag. I place you in the same class I place the 32 cowards who forced the closure of western springs. Although you have a case when it comes to christian rock.
Escape in town, behind O'Hannagins wouldn't be too bad if it occasionally had some people in there.
O'Hannigans is probably the only building I know with an identity crisis. It doesnt know whether it wants to be a bar, a nightclub or a pub, and as a result, it fails miserably at all three.
If there was ever a fire in float, I suspect quite a few people would die. It always strikes me as being far far too full and I worry about overloading everytime I walk up the stairs.
The Loaded Hog earns some respect for having pitchforks on the wall.
Kilala (MB) is still a dive but it's a classy dive at that.
Cock and Bull in Ellerslie ranks up there in terms of general atmosphere, but it's miles from anywhere.
Provedor is great before midnight on a friday. Between 1030 - 1200 it's unrivalled. Then you better find somewhere else to go.
The Wintergardens under the civic I rate highly.

ROFL at the letter complaining about Float this week
I remember when Float was Leftfield, it seemed all Craccum used to do was make fun of it.
kittenslayer - May 17, 2005 01:06 AM (GMT)
float is shit if: your not drunk + your not going with ya g/f
templar34 - May 17, 2005 01:12 AM (GMT)
Float is shit because...It's hyped beyond what it actually is, and is too full of drunk Polynesian men (no racism, statement of fact) for me to be able to relax.
My flatmate loves it because he likes to look at ladies, but he's shallow, ain't ya spork?
kiwi_hockey_guy - May 17, 2005 05:34 AM (GMT)
Float is pond-scum! too many underage kids there...!!
What is the big deal about float not letting guys in..... other bars have been doing it for ages! Met & Code two classic examples......
He would be complaining if he went in there, and it was filled with guys! Is it too hard for him to find some female friends (no sexual attraction to) that he can go out and enjoy a night of dancing etc...... (probably not as he's going to "float" and he is also probably an engineering student)

There's actually more hot chicks at the kings arms than float.
