Title: Selling Nitrous Oxide......

kiwi_hockey_guy - April 14, 2005 07:43 AM (GMT)
I can't remember if I saw it on 3 news last night or if it was on Campbell live last night, But they want to make it illegal to sell Nitrous Oxide cannisters at places like dairies etc..... you know the little steel cannisters..... They are ment to be used in automatic cream whippers but some youth are using them to inhale and get a 30 second buzz...... I think it's stupid if they do change the law regarding them because of the actions of some people....... I mean what is next..... Stop selling glue, petrol, paint etc........

(was only 1/2 assed listening so i may be a little off in my comments)

smiley - April 14, 2005 07:45 AM (GMT)
I have used nitrous oxide. I was concerned and then I did some research about it. Since doing the research I regret doing it, and because of its harmful effects I don't think it should be sold.

kiwi_hockey_guy - April 14, 2005 07:51 AM (GMT)
That is a fair comment but what about the other uses there are for it? There may be 100 people that are put out because of a few peoples stupid antics..... what about paint and glue sniffers?

smiley - April 14, 2005 08:01 AM (GMT)
why does a sex shop on mount eden road need to sell it? Those are stores you get it out of, that is the first line of doing somthing.

I suggest more education about the harmful effects of it and harsher regulations. I went to a dance party a while ago and they were selling it there, to be inhaled. That is wrong

kiwi_hockey_guy - April 14, 2005 08:09 AM (GMT)
Yeah im aware of places selling it for those purposes..... but what about gilmours that sell it in boxes to the catering industry, then dairies that sell it to house wifes that want to whip some cream in a short amount of time.....

El Marko - April 14, 2005 10:03 AM (GMT)
I'd be interested in hearing about your research Smiley. I too have tried it, (only on the odd occasion, not a regular user) and I'm just curious as to what the side effects are.

I know that it is carried around in ambulances and used as a mild general anaesthetic (they made me breath it when I hurt myself once), so is that harmful too?

PS: first post! Woo yea! B)

smiley - April 14, 2005 10:14 AM (GMT)
Basically it can affect your sexual desires, it can affect muscles in that you lose feeling, it can affect your mental state, it kills brain cells, it can also kill you.

Yes, it is an anaesthetic that they use.

My experience on it was good butI would not do it again.

I said earlier it should be illegal but there is the factor of people using it for legitimate purposes. The problem is that there is no way to identify the inhalers from the people who need it. I mean it might be possible to have identification checks, but it still wouldn't mean people are using it legitimately.

kiwi_hockey_guy - April 14, 2005 10:28 AM (GMT)
as far as i am aware nobody has been hurt by somebody high off NOS..... the buzz only last 30 odd seconds..... if people want to kill their brain cells let them do so..... when they start cutting off peoples hands with samurai swords that is when we should do something........

smiley - April 14, 2005 10:30 AM (GMT)
Nos usage does only affect the person taking it but it can lead to death if you inhale it too much.

kiwi_hockey_guy - April 14, 2005 11:04 AM (GMT)
Yes but so can oxygen liz........ most substances on this planet are fatal if too much is taken.....

Hang on Smiley, are you suggesting that because you chose to put something in your body, and now regret doing so, that law abiding citizens should have a product they put to legitimate use banned from sale?

If you put something in your body, that it your concern. Why should other people have a product they have a sensible and legitimate use for, removed from sale, on the off-chance that if they dont, you will find some very stupid use for it and might hurt yourself in the process? As for regretting your choice, welcome to adulthood, as an adult you will hopefully learn the function of regret, it's to remind you to make a better choice next time...

Frankly our police force are already too busy not attending 111 calls, without having to worry about whether or not you inhale...

It's just another law aimed at protecting the irresponsible (from themselves), at the cost of the sensible. If people want to hurt themselves, and it's a choice between using police resources to stop them, or using police forces to attend 111 calls (you know when law abiding citizens who actually want the polices' assistence call them in an extreme emergency), I suggest those who want help should be the main priority. If there's enough money left over after we have protected people from murderers, robbers, rapists, arsonists, etc, then we might look in to protecting people (who dont want to be protected) from themselves. In the meantime I suggest there are far more important priorities.

All this babying people and making their choices for them, only leaves them less practised at making good decisions for themselves. We are simply breeding irresponsibility; an 'if the government have not banned it, it must be ok' mentality.

I very doubt oxygen can be fatal, otherwise we would all be dead!

kiwi_hockey_guy - May 26, 2005 03:52 AM (GMT)
we do not breath pure oxygen do we? there is carbon dioxide in the air which makes us exhale after we breath it (i heard breathing pure oxygen will kill you because you can not exhale it)

yams - May 26, 2005 04:15 AM (GMT)
the CO2 u breathe out is the CO2 made in your cells as a result of metabolism, which requires O2.

Pure oxygen is corrosive, it readily oxidises other chemicals.

kiwi_hockey_guy - May 26, 2005 05:46 AM (GMT)
So if you inhaled pure oxygen you would die.....????

So if you inhaled pure oxygen you would die.....????

Air Composition

The sea-level composition of air (in percent by volume at the temperature of 15°C and the pressure of 101325 Pa) is given below.

Nitrogen 78.084 %
Oxygen 20.9476 %
Argon 0.934 %
Carbon Dioxide 0.0314 %
Neon 0.001818 %
Methane 0.0002 %
Helium 0.000524 %
Krypton 0.000114 %
Hydrogen 0.00005 %
Xenon 0.0000087 %

So no air isnt anywhere near pure oxygen. If it was you'd be in big trouble.

There is no nitrous in air generally. Nitrous (aka Hippy Crack) is relatively harmless. It does lower the uptake of the vitamin B family (especially B12), which is important for nerve function. There is evidence of one guys spine basically dissolving after extreme use of Nos (did about 20 cannisters a day for 20 years). This is of course an extreme case.

My view... sure NOS isnt good for you. Neither is smoking. Or Drinking. Or Bacon. Or anything to extreme. Doesnt mean we shouldnt be allowed to take it. But so is life.

Anyway, there are far worse things than Nos thats *detrimental to young ppl*, take pop culture for example...
