Title: Dumpster Diving
Booyacka - February 11, 2006 02:22 AM (GMT)
Herrooo, I've been away for months and trust me to make my first post in ages about dumpster diving. And trust me to do it 2 days before my exam when I don't have a shitting clue what I'm going to write about.
Basically I've just been interested in for a while now, probably since I read the Craccum article on it last year. At first I was a bit shocked and grossed out that people could have birthday parties with food taken from rubbish bins, but after some further reading (Wikipedia, I love thee madly) and pondering, I'm wondering if anybody here's done some diving or knows someone who does.
Want to know details like where is the best places around Auckland for munchies and stuff, and stories about how people react when they you snifing arund the bins.

There is a catering company just down the road from where I live (close to town), maybe I will scope it out at some point.

Midnight:
outside the Bakers Delight in Remuera Rd shops, a middle aged guy with an orange mini sorts through the Bakers Delight green bins. He offered me a bun last week when I was walking home. Apparently, pickings there are very good, and very clean. He is there almost every day that I have busses around there. He looks to be lower middle class, not too down on his luck, just.... savvy with his money, perhaps.

Heeey Ammsie :D long time no see.
Yeah I had an idea Baker's Delight would be a good place to start...do they just dump all the breads in the bin, or in a sack first? I guess if the only things they put in there are bread it wouldn't be too dirty, but do they dump other stuff like leftover dough or vegetable scraps, used tampons, etc?
Anything but the used tampons I can handle.

heyeeee!
Umm, Im not actually sure about the whole tampon/dough/sack thing, if I see him tonight Il ask him and then txt you?

Lovely! :3 Chuurr darling.
I wonder how places like Foodtown or Pak'N'Save go...there was a picture on the net I found of a two large boxes full of asprins, like, A LOT of asprins that somebody found while diving. I'm sure some people could do some mean stuff with that.
maniacnymph - February 11, 2006 03:16 AM (GMT)
shyiiit!
Foodtown used to give their leftover bakery shit to charity, but then people started fighting over it, so Im pretty damn sure they started just throwing it out at the end of the night.

Why don't bakerys just give all their food at the end of the day to a homeless shelter or some crap? Maybe the shelters could throw a few fins their way for their troubles.
EDIT: never mind, didn't see MNs post.

man KFC closing time in the best. all the chicken gets dumped into big black sacks and straight into the big lifter bins. just in a score, still very hot, if you are worried take it home and chuck it in the oven get it over 150 degrees and your set for a square meal. potato and gravies are sometimes thrown out too. Another good one is sandwich places, everything but the egg snadwiches are good. corned beer and sliced beef last for ever.

I remember this time at Subway, 10 minutes before closing time, this guy comes out from the kitchen and asks us if we want some meatballs. He has this big container of freshly cooked meatballs that he's going to throw out. Being the person who always has images of hungry African children stuck to the back of her head, I wanted to tell him to take it home or send it to the shelters...
There also used to be a big rubbish container at the back of our school where old magazines with the titles cut out off the covers (I never understood why they did that) were dumped in. I used to jump into them during lunch and get handfulls of Women's Weekly's for us to read during class, until the teachers caught on and banned us from going near it.

Haha, you could try my house. My dad is always going nuts about the amount of shit we throw away.

You people disgust me, pilfering the rubbish instead of paying for food and contributing to the economy. You're hurting New Zealand, go live in some filthy communist country if that's your attitude.

Eating from the trash is usually a choice that life forces on you, it's not one to be sought out. :P

yeah but if you were at a store with a sign that's selling orange juice for $1 a bottle, then you see the store people throw out the exact same bottles you just bought into a large bin, wouldn't you want to take a whole lot of free OJ? Sure the whole idea of taking things from rubbish bins may creep out a lot of people, but it's practically the same thing you pay money for and eat.
I used to think dumpster diving was picking out half eaten foods from restaurants and cafes, but these are mostly packaged or non-perishable stuff. As long as you won't get crushed by a rubbish collecting truck or get food poisoning from old KFC, why not? (although I wouldn't dive at KFC, not even if it was free XP)
the SO photos were awesome, look how joyful those guys are. I'd hate to see what their house looks like tho - all kinds of chips and dips and random kitch stuff lying around.
Tony Montana - February 11, 2006 05:36 AM (GMT)
ok, ok, but if we ever have dinner, leave the menu to me.

It just occured to me that I never answered your question.
Retailers get a refund on the magazines they don't sell. Instead of spending heaps of money on freight to send back the magazines to whence they came they just cut the titles (or rip off the covers) and post them back.
