Title: Tonic Water
Description: Does anyone here drink that stuff?

Adolf Chiang - January 12, 2006 02:30 AM (GMT)
Recently, having tried tonic water for the first time, I've acquired a taste for that beverage. What I don't understand is that, why is it so unpopular and it sells so poorly? The dairy owner laughs at me for drinking it just by itself as it is bitter, I just believe that it isn't bitter enough.

Happy Ahmed - January 12, 2006 02:40 AM (GMT)
You may be gay, but at least you won't get malaria.

Dr_Steve - January 12, 2006 02:41 AM (GMT)

I quite like Chi

it really does sound its name when you take the cap off.

Happy Ahmed - January 12, 2006 02:43 AM (GMT)
I like that stuff too.

I can't stand tonic water though. It needs gin. And a twist of lemon.

Dr_Steve - January 12, 2006 02:43 AM (GMT)
that chi stuff should really be called Pffffffffffff

Happy Ahmed - January 12, 2006 02:45 AM (GMT)
That's the noise Yoko Ono made when I removed my cock from her wilted vagina.

The beverage doesn't contain medically significant amounts of quinine.

Also, are there other brand of tonic water commerically available (apart from Schweppes)?

Yeliah - January 12, 2006 02:51 AM (GMT)
Yeah. Budget.

Slut Ahmed is right. Tonic should be only consumed with the presence of gin and a twist of lemon. Otherwise it is about as tasteful and useful as Chiang in the Hero Parade.

Chi is good mixed with feijoa 42 Below, yo.

I can be 'useful' if someone pays me to shoot the gays.

I'll pay the gays to wank on your face.

He looks kinda like a guy I used to know called Wilson Lau.

...and now for the severe beating of a high school science teacher.

templar34 - January 12, 2006 04:23 AM (GMT)
Tonic water needs copious amounts of gin and fresh lime juice, and needs to be ice cold.

Don't ever try and discount tonic water. Ever. I've tried.

And it does contain quinine, and do you know anything about placebos?
It was the original medium for malaria treatment.

Steveo - January 12, 2006 05:17 AM (GMT)
I agree with slut ahmed about teh gin and lemon.

Hauser - January 12, 2006 05:46 AM (GMT)
Haha, I think I know Wilson Lau, Mr Montana, and I see the resemblance.

I only drink tonic water for the the quinine, a la Ahmed.

However, most tonic water today contains a medically insignificant amount of quinine, and is thus used for its flavor only. It is consequently less bitter, and is also usually sweetened.

I got this in poster form for a dollar (attached to another picture, not beatles related) and have it on my wall. Not that i'm particularly into the beatles, but it adds to my room nicely.

Adolf, did you realise medium to heavy consumption of caffeine can set off various terrible prion-based diseases, including CJB, Kuru, and other terrible alergic reactions?

Too much tonic water, if it's budget and contains a decent volume of quinine, can kill you.

Oh well....

*Opens another bottle of tonic water, skulls all the contents, throws the empty bottle into a nearby bin.*

I find tonic water goes not so bad with jagermeister as well, but maybe thats just me being fucking strange.

Miss_Illusioned - January 12, 2006 09:55 AM (GMT)
Ick I can't stand tonic water. At all. My friend ordered A Vodka bitters which contained it and it was god awful!

Dr_Steve - January 12, 2006 09:55 AM (GMT)
well in Prague everyone drinks that bubbly bottled minreal water, but that aint tonic water as such...

and did you guys know that quinine is fluorescent? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Tonic_water_uv.jpg

something to try @ home Adolf...

Miss_Illusioned - January 12, 2006 10:18 AM (GMT)
See bubbley mineral water I understand.. bitter tasting fizzy water I don't.

Adolf Chiang - January 12, 2006 11:00 AM (GMT)
One possible reason for me liking the tonic is because Chinese medicines can be 10x more bitter than the average cup of black coffee. Tonic water simply isn't bitter enough...

Its jsut called a blacklight, fits into a normal lightbulb socket. You can find them at any hippie store, or here: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photo...on-44844070.htm

If I need to see a science experiment, I'll do it in a proper lab. I don't waste my time and money over some novelty bulb.

Dr_Steve - January 12, 2006 11:38 AM (GMT)
this experiment doesn't need laboratory conditions, unless you want to measure the fluorescence output of the tonic water and see if it is consistent over a number of bottles of course. For that, you'd need to use a laser instead of a bulb though (the source needs to be a consistent wattage, and coherent light always helps).

Should that first paragraph read 'quinine' for 'caffeine', or not? If it is caffeine, I think I'm going to get all of those diseases.

What's a prion again?

Dick Smith had them here. For $1. How cheap are you, Adolf? Buy a lightbulb and live a little!

EDIT: Sorry, double post...

templar34 - January 12, 2006 12:26 PM (GMT)
Lol once again an engineer is pwned by teh Quantam Physics major, Dr Steve.

/EDIT: Prions are associated with CJD, Alzhiemer's.

So I understand. But what are they? Some kind of filament in the brain?

templar34 - January 12, 2006 08:03 PM (GMT)
They're some protein junk, which can infect. They're self-replicating, and that's what happens with BSE. They replicate and replicate inside a bovine brain cell, getting to such high levels that the cell malfunctions (causing the craziness), and continue to multiply until the cell bursts, releasing all the contained prions to infect adjacent cells.

If anyone know any more specific Bio, feel free to correct me. Google is my friend.

Bah! For N.Z$1.00 I can buy a 600mL bottle of tonic and still have some coins left over for that busking Chinese flute player on Queen St. (Sometimes I pay him to play my favorite folk tunes.)
