This is interesting, maybe it is why I never bully others, I have never watched much tv.

This is an obvious case of correlation rather than causation, I'm tired of the medias retarded way of presenting science to the public.

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers anyone?

I think they are linked to be honest, I think violent programming can affect one's personality and relation to others - social conditioning can revrse the effect though.

Here’s the link: kids who watch a shitload of TV obviously have parents that don't pay attention or show love to them enough, that’s why they have nothing else to do. Kids whose parents read to them, take them out for walks and stuff are much more loved, and so have less issues. So its back to the adage the most precious thing you can give your kids is time.
I honestly doubt it has much to do with the television itself.

liz_shaw - April 5, 2005 09:40 AM (GMT)
good point but you do pick up characteristics from television as well.

I agree with you doc, but also, how many programmes these days are about compassion, self-esteem and love for your fellow human being. You certainly won't find them in the next episode of Survivor or Roadtrip (or whatever paris hilton flounces herself around in). However i don't think issues really affect 4 yr-olds as stated in the study.

When it comes to 4 yr olds, it would really be an issue of the lack of parental stimulation. Plus they just dont make cartoons like they used to...

"...where imagination, is sucked out of children by a cathode ray nipple. Televison, the only wet nurse that would create a cripple."

No programmes are but how much of anything these days is about compassion. Not much at all, if anything. That would be a factor too as you said.

I watched teenage mutent ninja turtles and a number of other 'violent' shows when I was a kid and I was never a bully. Although I do know my mum reduced the ammount of television i was allowed to watch greatly. which forced me to find other things to do, like play with my dollies and build mini-society's.
But then again it doesn't help when teenage shows like dragon ball Z are poorly translated and sold to children.

Dr_Steve - April 5, 2005 10:28 AM (GMT)
LOL be glad they don't translate what they're actually saying

I feel this is largely the main reason also, its the reason kids in America go on school shootings combined with the other factors of school bullying and violent media.

liz_shaw - April 5, 2005 11:20 AM (GMT)
so are you suggesting we cut out violent media altogether?

Although the media plays a part, I do not think it is the only reason, I think other things come into it.
*Upbringing - attention/compassion/time/love of your parents.
*Society around you, shootings must make it hard in the states to feel safe so bullying makes you feel safe.
*Obesity - low self esteem so you pick on others to make yourself feel better.
*Low self esteem and depression - It is a cry for help.

Fez - April 5, 2005 11:24 AM (GMT)
No not all, I said the violent media had a side effect, the main reason is poor parenting as well as a combination of other factors.

Ill give an example.

The columbine kids:

A ) Fucked up childhood
B ) Bullied at school
C ) Played modded "Doom" religiously (modded in that it contained characters and maps they themselves created, so essentially they played out the fantasy of shooting everyone they hated almost every night)
D ) *gasp* listened to Ramstein

This is the factors given by a "Time" magazine review, pick out the ones you think are the least flawed and/or ridiculous.

I pick A and B

liz_shaw - April 5, 2005 11:29 AM (GMT)
I would have to pick A but a fucked up childhood would lead to the others. The fucked up childhood could consist of bullying so to get your aggression out you take to playing violent games and listening to violent music and thus it then leads to the murders.

I don't think kids should have access to guns. I know it is a safety thing in the US of A but Bush is supposed to be pro life and yet he is frequently contradicting himself and his viewpoints.

Which is it Bush? Life or Death?
