I have beside me a Dick Smith USB 2.0 two-port PCMCIA card, part number XH6739. It came with my laptop, but I'm not quite sure what it is or what it does. There's an odd USB cable with it in the box, with one normal sized socket end and one smaller, square end.

What are these mystery components and how can I put them to use?

you stick it in your PCMCIA slot (probably on the side of your laptop) and suddenly you have two USB 2.0 ports.

The U in USB stands for Universal, it was designed to connect practically anything to your computer, so if you have a printer, ipod, digital camera, some mice/keyboards, you can hook it up to your laptop.
The cable you got will either be the kind to hook you up to printers, or the kind to hook you up to mp3 players/cameras.

I also have an odd power adaptor in the same box, which appears to have the same kind of multi-pin plug as an older mouse or keyboard... what on earth would that be for?

so one end goes in the wall, the other into the mouse/keybord plug?

Power adapter should be used to power up the card if ur laptop doesn't have enough power ( i think) . There should be a hold near the USB ports to plug the power adapter ?
