Title: Iran bans western music

ranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has banned Western and "indecent" music from state-run TV and radio stations.
The ban follows a ruling in October by the Supreme Cultural Revolutionary Council, which he heads, to ban Western songs from the airwaves.
"Blocking indecent and Western music from the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting is required," a statement from the council said.
Songs by artists such as Eric Clapton and George Michael will be affected.
'Lack of knowledge'
Songs such as Clapton's Rush, Michael's Careless Whisper and The Eagles' Hotel California are often used as background music on Iranian TV programmes.
Songs by American easy-listening artist Kenny G are also often featured.
"This is terrible," said Iranian guitarist Babak Riahipour, a musician whose songs featured on state TV and radio. "The decision shows a lack of knowledge and experience."
Mr Ahmadinejad became president this year promising to reverse a recent series of reforms and return Iran to the ultra-conservative atmosphere of the 1979 revolution.
"Supervision of content from films, TV series and their voice-overs is emphasized in order to support spiritual cinema and to eliminate trite and violence," the council said on its website in reference to the October ruling.
Mr Ahmadinejad's programme has included sacking more moderate members of the government and replacing them with ex-military commanders and politically inexperienced religious leaders.
In recent weeks he launched an outspoken attack on Israel, calling for the Jewish state to be "wiped off the map".
He also claimed the Nazi Holocaust, which killed six million Jews, was a "myth". |
agh, he gives GWB more fuel to spread democracy! damn!

What else would you expect? Their president is an old hardliner, whatever reforms achieved previously will be removed gradually.

They'll have to stick to just Country from now on...
Seriously, this is pretty screwed up.

I wonder if they allow secular classical music over there. It's not really associated with the perceived immoral, decadent, modern West.

That's unlikely, as Bush is a Southerner.
Imagine an Iranian hoe-down!

Lol. Funny little critters aren't they.

I wouldn't call them "little critters", they're more like the Taliban with electricity.

They aren't that bad just yet. Iran had no idea what they were getting into in 79, the poor bastards.
I've actually heard that it was basically illegal to play Western music there initially anyway, and how metal bands had to play inside soundproofed garages/houses or else they would be prosecuted and such like.
the oob - December 20, 2005 09:28 AM (GMT)
This is good news. The more retarded the Iranian government becomes, the sooner the unretarded population will overthrow them.
Hauser - December 20, 2005 11:12 AM (GMT)
I doubt it. Fundamentalist Muslims are too powerful there, and basically the entire active political left and centre got wiped out during various purges over the last 26 years.
the oob - December 20, 2005 11:27 AM (GMT)
I doubt the Iranians would let their government put them in a situation like, say, Afghanistan was before the war, they'll only be pushed so far, and I can easily see jackasses like the current government being the kind to keep pushing. The only reason the hard liners have power now is because so many boycotted the election.
Hauser - December 20, 2005 11:29 AM (GMT)
And because the hardliner is actually pretty cool in a lot of ways.
the oob - December 20, 2005 11:31 AM (GMT)
There's nothing cool about banning metal Hauser. Not cool at all.
samf - December 20, 2005 11:34 AM (GMT)
Joyless Iranian mullahs make Manowar cry. You don't want anyone to make Manowar cry, do you?
Hauser - December 20, 2005 11:34 AM (GMT)
Oh hell no, I absolutely agree with you. I am the biggest metalhead on these forums, I am even more metal than Cass. Megadeth and Children of Bodom are my favourite bands of all time.
Nevertheless, building nuclear weapons and threatening the USA are cool. Then again I prefer people who want to legalise cocaine whilst applying democratic socialism in Bolivia!
EDIT: Samf, you are fundamentally wrong, Manowar are warriors of the world, and united they can defeat these pigs!
the oob - December 20, 2005 11:44 AM (GMT)
Man I want Israel to bomb their nuclear facilities. I missed WW1, WW2, and pretty much missed the cold war, but I'll be on the edge of my seat for WW3.
Hopefully in WW3 New Zealand will be kind of like the back row of a Gallagher show, you can still see what's going on, but are far enough away that don't get crapped on when they start messing shit up.

What about System of a Down and Cat Stevens?!?!
