Title: CSU Illegal in Aussie
Description: Federal Law Enacted Banning CSU

El Matador - December 10, 2005 02:39 AM (GMT)
QUOTE
Compulsory student unionism will be banned from next July after legislation passed in the Senate, with the support of Family First Senator Steven Fielding.

The deputy vice-chancellor of Curtin University, Jeanette Hacket, says it will now be a challenge retaining student clubs and services.

"Some of the very expensive cultural activities would be of concern to us but we would hope to maintain a good diversity of activities for students," she said.

State Education Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich has criticised Family First.

"Clearly I don't know what they represent because it's the young children of families that go to universities," she said.

Ms Ravlich says VSU will make Australian universities less competitive on the international market.

"The simple fact is under this legislation, Western Australia's universities will not be able to compete with the lively universities of North America and Europe that do invest heavily in student amenities and services," she said.

So this is just Western Australia? What a shitty situation.

No, it's a Federal enactment, the source was just from WA.

Doubleplusbad.

Yes, invetivably will be used to justify why we stay voluntary if it comes up.

It quite honestly doesn't surprise me. Australia is about to hit what NZ experienced under Labour in the 80s and National in the 90s as the Liberals/Country party get cracking at fucking up the country, starting with the communist universities!

Forcing someone to join a union isn't very cool man. Or perhaps we should force everyone to join the Gay Pride Steevador Union because a few people want more money to bling bling its pub.

You're approaching this from a far too liberal mindset, MrT. I think compulsory unionism at workplaces is perhaps out of order, but in universities, it's ridiculous because the body is democratically elected.

Saw a load of campaigns against it up at Queensland Uni, guess their efforts were wasted.
