Title: Anorexia Epidemic

Adolf Chiang - November 22, 2005 04:34 AM (GMT)
According to last night's '60 minutes' report on the prevalence of anorexia, it appears that the epidemic is fuelled by 'pro-ana' websites contributing tips on how to hide such a problem from others.

Anyway, some grotesque images of anorectics being glamorized as fashionable were shown in that report. Those thin women reminded viewers of walking skeletons, like the survivors of the Nazi death camps or WWII Japanese POW camps.

I thought, "How can the Auschwitz-Birkenau look be fashionable?" :hilarious:

Mate, I spent all night laughing after coming up with that comment! Instead of comparing the anorectics to the concentration camp victims, I could have used starving Africans, but that's more offensive since starvation in that region is still ongoing.

"I didn't know that Auschwitz inmates posed for Vogue!"

In their next fashion release, it'll be temporary serial number tattoos for the forearms! LMAO!

Red bracelets for anas, purple for bulemics, or something like that. Its really fricken sad, but these sites are old news. To be honest, i used to belong to one, back in the days when i wasn't as robust as i now am. They give you a place where you feel normal, and accepted- which obviously is NOT a good thing, BUT one of the main causes of anorexia is obviously feeling down, lonely, and unaccepted- and these people and their tips make you feel 'happy'.

edit: and these people have seriously distorted body image, obviously. When you look in the mirror, all you can see is FAT even when you weigh <40kgs and are 170cms.

Maliekieth - November 22, 2005 09:38 AM (GMT)
It scares me that some people have the urge to be that skinny, but I also know that often eating disorders have a link to some emotional stress in the persons life, and when that is sorted out, then they can start to sort themselves out.

the oob - November 22, 2005 09:44 AM (GMT)
According to my sister (psych grad), recovered anorexics often end up being fatties, because they've grown obsessed with food, which results in its deprivation/over consumption.

maniacnymph - November 22, 2005 09:53 AM (GMT)
im not fat. Although lately i HAVE been craving bacon and icecream more than usual.....
ehh, im not worried. I'm too health conscious to be a dangerous weight/smoke etc. yayee

edits: yeah i can see how this would work though. Its liek the saying: marry a fat chick. If you marry a skinny chick, she will get fat and selfconscious and the sex will then suck. A chick who is large all her life learns to get over her insecurities quicker, and will care more about whats feeling good than how much fat the light is exposing.

If you marry a thin chick, she'll get fat when she hits middle age. If you marry a fat chick, she'll get disgustingly corpulent when she hits middle age.

Obesity epidemic .... , anorexia epidemic .... , is the next epidemic going to be the AVERAGE WEIGHT EPIDEMIC?

Adolf Chiang - November 22, 2005 08:28 PM (GMT)
I better think up more death camp references to post; pro-ana is something so funny that I can't stop laughing about.

SheDevil - November 22, 2005 11:04 PM (GMT)
Anorexics get fat because when you starve youself your body eats away at the muscle deposits for energy, you are left with nothing but fat and your metabolism gets fucked relly badly. When you start eating again your body puts on fat, and lots of it, because your metabolism cant work properly to convert kilijoules into muscle, you put on weight quicker. Its a sad cycle.

I really wouldnt laugh at these people, it's a constant battle for them to just make it through day to day without eating, the psychological torment is massive. If anything these pro-ana websites should give you a shocking look into what it's like to be anorexic, the torment and suffering that they go through. Sure it's their choice but often they can't help it, they try to get better but they just can't.

Adolf Chiang - November 22, 2005 11:11 PM (GMT)
The anorexics are intentionally starving themselves and the bodily sufferring they experience are equivalent to death camp victims; which is why I laugh at them for the deadly choice and thus, the 'Auschwitz-Birkenau look'. I also find it funny since Auschwitz-Birkenau is a very European name, just like those exotic fashion labels.

:hilarious:

SheDevil - November 22, 2005 11:31 PM (GMT)
You've sort of missed the point Chaing, i know you think its funny at some subversive level but it really isnt, they arent saying "im not going to eat today so i can look like people from Auschwitz", they dont want to look like that, even when they do that isnt the image they see in the mirror.

Happy Ahmed - November 22, 2005 11:33 PM (GMT)
That, and he has been laughing at his own joke for his last posts in this thread.

I know that looking like concentration camp inmates isn't the point for the anorectics. However, if they have contemplated at that comparison then perhaps they would be scared into changing their grotesque habit.

I told others of the joke and they found it funny, but disturbing. Honestly, what would Herr Hoess say? :hilarious:

Could anorexia be some sort of social backlash against obesity?

:frustrated: :frustrated: :frustrated:

Ok kids, say it and spell it with me now A N O R E X I C.

AN-O-REX-IC. All together now, Anorexic. There.

You are wrong because:

They look at concentration camp victims and then they look at themselves in the mirror and THAT IS NOT what they see, they see a 300pound walrus (no offence Archie McRiff)

So you can tell them they look like that till you are blue in the face, show them photos and say, "look, thats what you look like" but it WILL NOT get through to them.

The only thing they are scared of is losing control, control over their bodies and food. Nothing will scare them into "giving up their grotesque habit", which by the way IS NOT a habit but a way of life, an everyday battle. Even doctors and family members telling them they are going to die if they do not eat DOES NOT help. Sometimes even after they have changed and gotten better, they relapse, it is an addiction, a sickness.

And as for your last comment................. :frustrated: Anorexia is not a social backlash. It is not a trend or a movement against 'the man' or a protest against obesity. The fact that you could actually consider that comment to be even remotely plausible shows that you really don't know what you are talking about in regards to this illness.

I'd stick to discussing war and guns if i were you.

A person who is suffering from anorexia is referred to as 'anorexic' or (less commonly) 'anorectic'. "Anorectic" is the noun form, where "anorexic" is the adjectival form. These two are often used incorrectly when applied.

Does it really matter? Being pedantic about that is hardly going to help you save face after you've shown your ignorance on the matter of eating disorders over the course of this thread.

I never tried to be the expert on the subject. I just felt like comparing the appearance of anorectics to that of concentration camp inmates.

We need to do a massive promotion in next year's Craccum. This year the only mentionings of our forum's existence is in the classified section. Perhaps we need to do a half page article just to advertise our existence and have each prominent goon write a sentence about themselves.

maniacnymph - November 23, 2005 10:29 AM (GMT)
uh, how about no. I'd really rather not.

We did get some mentions in the letters to the editor - and in Robert, I mean Templar's, letter especially - but otherwise we need to promote the forum more in Craccum.

Not sure how that's going to work when we're all 'independent' and everything though. I don't mean to pour water on Fez's plans - I'll stick around through any changes here - but why can't we get a paid board and remain the Craccum Forum?

With a resume like that, it won't be any time at all before Oscmar pick you up as a 'volunteer' on which to try out their latest ideas...

I'd prefer to stay as the "craccum forum" considering all of (well most) us have joined because we are Craccum fans, thats not really something to base a online mag on. Not doggin your idea Fez (because its a good idea), but maybe we could cut this board down abit and make another pay one for Fez's mag

Of course it all depends on who the 07 editor(s) will be

Adolf Chiang - November 24, 2005 06:08 AM (GMT)
How about a classic half-page advertisement for the forum? Steveo can help talk down the costs since he knows the editor.

Happy Ahmed - November 24, 2005 06:18 AM (GMT)
Dude I have tongue kissed the editor.

It's not going to get you cheap advertising.

Steveo - November 24, 2005 06:46 AM (GMT)
Most of us know the editor Adolf,

samf - November 24, 2005 06:56 AM (GMT)

Ditto. And Craccum's ad space is precious, since it can be used to generate money to pay for more magazines. Then there's the matter of having enough empty space for this week's content...

(I wonder what would happen if Ryan and Chiang got into an in-depth discussion on anything.)

Hauser - November 24, 2005 06:59 AM (GMT)

Are you talking about having it published in the mag? That's some wishful thinking, you got. It'll depend on the guarantee of my anonymity and money being paid. The content for publishing must also meet my approval (can't afford to have my good words taken out off context).
