Title: Gamers?

JPAR - November 22, 2005 03:44 AM (GMT)
Just testing the water for anyone who likes to game on these boards, be it pc or console.

At the moment i'm playing World of Warcraft, although it's starting to wear on me, apart from that I still play some old CS and have started playing civilization 4 which is pretty great.

Anyone?

the oob - November 22, 2005 03:51 AM (GMT)
If you like Civ 4, we're planning to have a multiplayer game of it, see this thread.

I advise automating anything you can, then gradually take control of the automated parts till you've learnt how to run everything.

I just bought The Movies on PC, its bloody addictive!

Senor - November 26, 2005 11:06 AM (GMT)
hard gamer! form 'nam. not playing a whole load atm cos my PC is awaiting upgrade, dont want to start WOW cos my grades will suffer lol.

Hauser - November 26, 2005 12:34 PM (GMT)
Games have sort of died for me in the past few years, and I only play them pretty rarely now, and don't keep up with anything. Having a lan with my mates right now, but we never actually play games (we have played two games of Age of Empires I in the past two days, and a couple of my mates of the ones here played AOE III for half an hour. They're currently playing WoW, while me and one other lurk around arguing about Pantera vs Megadeth).

But you can count me as an old school gamer. CS is a pretty new game for me, as are Age of Empires II and Quake Three (I don't play any of the three much anymore). Battlefield 1942 is a popular recent game of mine, as is Tropico.

I'll fuck you all up at Quake II multiplayer, CS or Red Alert (that means you, Adolf).

samf - November 26, 2005 07:15 PM (GMT)

^^ Dude, if I can borrow AOEII off you to burn I'll be a very happy man.

I haven't had money to spend on games for years, but I still spend a fair bit of time at iPlay on Queen Street playing

Battlefield Vietnam
GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas
Max Payne 2
the NFS:U series

... so I'm not a very sophisticated gamer. I also have a very old 333mhz PC at home which I use as a typewriter, and for playing endless games of C&C Red Alert. B)

Senor - November 26, 2005 09:01 PM (GMT)
maliekieth and i are CSers from like a year or two ago, we used to be hard out, so the fucking up of CS will be coming from us.\

i find myself emulating old arcade games more than anyhting else now. marvel vs streetfighter, xman vs street fighter, warriors dreams all 1 credit clocks on hard.

trying to finish VTM:bloodlines atm, but i drop to like 5 frames on heavy firefights :(

templar34 - November 26, 2005 09:11 PM (GMT)
Bloodlines is very poorly optimised. The level loading is fucked too (at astart of game levels are about 500KB, by end of game they're about 5MB). It's a shame, because it's an awesome game.

I no longer have Dawn of War :(

Recently played GTA: VC, Dragonshard, Neverwinter Nights, KotOR I & II, NFS:U & U2, WC3.

Used to play most everything, including CS beta 6 :P and UT.

Maliekieth - November 26, 2005 10:06 PM (GMT)
Long time gamer, started with Quake2 and Starcraft back when I was like 11 or 12.

Currently just finished F.E.A.R, and playing a fair bit of Civ4. I need to get my hands on Quake4 and X3, and I am waiting The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. The bastards delayed it :frustrated: !

Adolf Chiang - November 27, 2005 12:50 AM (GMT)
Long time gamer here, although I regret having a CD-RW that's not working at the moment, plus the hardware's a little too old.

JPAR - November 27, 2005 02:23 AM (GMT)
I can be pretty ruthless at CS, though at other times I can be pretty shit. I mainly play fun maps lately, especially scout knives, can't be fucked spending 5 minutes sitting around when some bastard awps you in the first 30 seconds.

Money shouldn't affect your ability to game! I've bought all of two or three games in the past few years (WOW and Dawn of war come to mind), bittorrent and adsl are your friends. Although truth be, once you have WOW you probably won't have time to play anything else for a fair while.

I thought I was a good Dawn of war player until I had a Lan with some friends and got my ass totally handed to me by one guy.

Now that the holidays have started its the perfect time to start a Wow character. I started playing when it first came out in Nov last year right after exams and by the time uni started again I was raiding Molten Core (the highest dungeon at the time) so didn't need to play nearly as much.

Steveo - November 27, 2005 05:06 AM (GMT)
So far these holidays ive finished:

Halflife2
Doom 3
Doom 3 exp
Serious Sam 2
Dawn Of War: Winter Assault
Starwars: Battlefield

Yeah all I do is work and game :*(

Tony Montana - December 18, 2005 05:04 AM (GMT)
Have recently finished Rome: Total War and Rome: Barbarian Invasion-they're truly exceptional games.

Right now I'm playing Civ 4, also a great turn based strategy game, but it just doesn't seem right that longbowmen can take out Modern Armour, even with a 90% defensive bonus.

Always playing CS-can't kick the habit. COD 2 is also pretty cool. Anyone played The Warriors on ps2? Breaking a bottle over someone's head has never been so satisfying.

Steveo - December 18, 2005 05:08 AM (GMT)
I've been playing CS: Source, anyone else play? We should have a forum game

Yeah I think I'm too lazy to have a whole forum game of Civ 4, but I'd be up for some FPS or RTS game. Maybe not CS though, as it'd probably need to be some game that doesn't require a key for the net, or else some won't be able to play. Also, it'd need to be a game which would play well with around 5 people, since I doubt we'd get much more than that.

For RTS, Dawn of War would kick ass, and would fill those criteria. For FPS, we'd be limited to older games as any newer ones require a key for the net and a really mint computer (which some here won't have). Jedi Academy (AKA Jedi Knight 3) would work. Or AVP2... does that need a key for the net?

The main difficulty is in everyone having the game, we'd need to distribute it somehow. I could hand out copies at the next goon event I suppose, and then those that don't show to that can get a copy some other time from someone who did turn up. This might be avoidable if we choose a game that everyone (or almost everyone) already has, CS, Starcraft or Quake 1/2/3 may be such a game.

Senor - December 18, 2005 05:46 AM (GMT)
i play source. just reinstalled unreal 2 and farcry cos i hvnt played them in years.

Happy Ahmed - December 18, 2005 05:48 AM (GMT)
I am fucking hardcore.

I am playing starcraft. Yeah.

Tony Montana - December 18, 2005 06:09 AM (GMT)
OMG ZERG RUSH KEKEKEKEKEKKE!!!

the oob - December 18, 2005 06:11 AM (GMT)
I'd be up for Starcraft, although DOW would be preferable, but I guess everyone is more likely to have and be able to run Starcraft.

Here's an idea. Everyone who would be keen for some forum game list the games you have and would be willing to play, then we know what the best options are. Don't bother with options that are unrealistic, I've omitted Halflife 2 for instance because only a few will have the game with a key.

Also say what connection you have, if we have a lot of people on modems then we would want a game where latency (ping time) is less of an issue, which probably means RTS games.

For me:
* Starcraft, either regular or Brood War
* Dawn of War, either regular or Winter Assault
* Quake 1/2/3
* Jedi Knight 2/3
* Counterstrike (any version which just needs a regular halflife key)
* Team Fortress (either quake or halflife version of this).
* Warcraft 3 DOTA- this is a map where you only control a hero, changes the nature of the game quite a bit. This can be played without a key if you use a hacked server.
* Unreal 2 XMP, this is a free game you can download from the net.
* Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, this is another free game as above
* Soldat. This is a small game which everyone here should be able to download, and is free.

Apart from Counterstrike (and Quake 3? I'm not sure about that one) those are all games we'd be able to play on the net without the need for a key.

Steveo - December 18, 2005 07:50 AM (GMT)
Ahmed, we decided last night that you're not Hardcore anymore, just internet Hardcore

It's pretty neat... it's a two dimensional third person shooter.

I'd rather play other games, but Soldat would be by far the easiest game for the forum to play due to its simplicity. It's free, it's easy to learn, it's small enough that even 56kers can download it (11.3mB according to this page), it will run well on even crappy computers, and probably requires very little upsteam and downstream bandwidth due to it being two dimensional (which means I could probably host the game and that it would work well on modems).

Here's what it looks like:

Soldat was leet back in the day, now it's just degenerated.

CS: Source is the best, its the funniest too

KNIFE FIGHT

I play a bit of source. I'm pretty mediocre though. Also I've had a broken right wrist in a cast for the last month or so, so my stats aren't the 1337est.

Nationstates used to be fun. With the power of the browser, you can create whatever scenarios your nation would like to get involved in.

Of course, I prefer to play games in 3D!
