Title: Hubbard still a jerk
Description: Should stick to cereal.

Talking with Dick Hubbard about RWC 2011:
| QUOTE |
He did not expect any major opposition, unlike with the V8 races.
"This just eclipses the V8s by a magnitude of hundreds.
"Car racing is not part of Auckland, rugby is. This is linking into our national psyche and our culture." |
Cue my letter to the Herald, Ala Rodney Hide;
| QUOTE |
Dick Hubbard’s scathing remarks regarding the V8 Supercars in the Saturday Herald are blatant proof of the self-serving arrogance that is prevalent in the Auckland City Council Chambers. It was also a totally unnecessary dig at the motorsport community within New Zealand, and undermines the achievements of the motorsport industry and volunteers.
The Mayor is a fool to suggest that V8 Racing/Motorsport is not part of our culture. There has been a Hill-climb race through the Domain for over fifty years (now under threat from the Parks Department). Tens of thousands of fans flock to Pukekohe for the V8 Supercar races each year. The International Rally of New Zealand is based in Auckland. For Hubbard to suggest that local culture has no connection with motorsport is disgraceful.
I also find it hard to see the merit in AK05, with one random billing taken from the website being ‘Australian Bush Dancing’. How is this relevant to our culture? Fund an arts festival running at a loss? Of course. Back international motorsport? No way.
I do not want the distribution of my rate levies in the hands of someone as narrow-minded as Mr Hubbard, and if he is to make such ignorant statements and attack communities within his jurisdiction then he is not fit for office and should resign immediately. |
I call coup d etat on his ass.

What a short-sighted thing to say. Have you sent your riposte already?
Happy Ahmed - November 19, 2005 09:29 AM (GMT)
I really don't think the V8's would have been good for Auckland. This city just isn't compatible with something that disruptive, particularly on the proposed course.
The infrastructure is fucked enough without closing half of it for a week.
DON'T QUESTION ME I AM A CIVIL ENGINEER AND I KNOW MORE THAN YOU.

I agree with you Cass. The V8 Race needed to happen somewhere either out by the airport or in East Tamaki. To think that they could seal off an aterial route was just idiotic and they wasted a lot of money to find that out.
I propose that someone constructing an industrial estate design a possible circuit into their street lay out...Really that is the only way a street circuit will ever happen....

Even as a strong bleeding heart lefty here, I agree with you Sloanie.
I still think they should've done V8 races perhaps for one day in the city, during the weekend, and made it as least disruptive as possible, then moved around the rest of the city where it was far less disruptive and where they have bigger roads.
Nevertheless, Hubbard IS right that rugby is more important than racing to NZ culture, but I don't think he needed to use that to justify a point that we didn't actually need the races to be held.
El Matador - November 19, 2005 09:19 PM (GMT)
I'm not questioning the importance of rugby...It just disappoints me when someone makes statements like this because it kills off any chance we have in the future of having events.
Adolf Chiang - November 19, 2005 11:24 PM (GMT)
I agree with Ahmed here that the V8 races will simply ridicule our shortage of roading. Now that we've got the Rugby World Cup, let's file the V8 race proposals under acient history and get the infrastructure up and running, we've been given 6 years and time is precious.

Im with Cass, it was a stupid fucking idea. Hell I played soccer at the domain and they had a fun-run thing going on at the sametime, it took us like two hours just to get out because they closed a few roads around parnell etc. Imagine what it would have been like downtow!
El Matador - November 21, 2005 05:55 AM (GMT)
The V8 racing may still happen. If I have my way, it will. Without sounding like Liz, there were a few options not explored by the council and once the wounds have healed there is the chance to try again.
Hauser - November 21, 2005 08:01 AM (GMT)
Oh Christ, don't run with John Banks next time Sloanie!
Toby Turner - November 27, 2005 08:46 AM (GMT)
I like Sloanie's original point. Its not Hubbard's job to write off something many Aucklanders enjoy. He's trying to cover his own fuck up with an 'i told you so.' I also saw his distasteful letter in the herald last week, blushing at Brian Rudman's comparison of him with Leonardo Di Vinci. What a chump

'Tis a good idea.
El Matador - November 28, 2005 05:00 AM (GMT)
Too far away. Must happen in Manukau or East Tamaki. Big wide roads. Close to airport...
samf - November 28, 2005 05:22 AM (GMT)
They have trucks to move their cars with, don't they?
El Matador - November 28, 2005 05:55 AM (GMT)
Yes but Helensville is miles away from anywhere, as is Pukekohe, as will be Hamton Downs.
Steveo - November 29, 2005 05:37 AM (GMT)
Hellensville is 35 minutes from the CBD
trix - November 29, 2005 08:41 AM (GMT)
Pukekohe is 5 mins from my house.
