Title: More Road Casualties
liz_shaw - April 3, 2005 12:02 PM (GMT)
http://xtramsn.co.nz/news/0,,11964-4252444,00.htmlI find this article interesting because no matter how many people die on the roads there is still dangerous driving.
Looking at the location it is also interesting because stats on
http://ltsa.govt.nz show that aucklanders drive faster and more dangerously than other drivers in other regions of new zealand.
Why can't the message just get through?
acrowley - April 3, 2005 10:45 PM (GMT)
Can you point out the section in that article where it says dangerous driving caused the crash?
liz_shaw - April 4, 2005 08:45 AM (GMT)
Well how else do you crash into a tree if you are riding safely?
it is something that I have interpreted from that article.
it was not explicity said. It was implied in my opinion.
acrowley - April 4, 2005 10:41 AM (GMT)
Perhaps
a) A dog ran out into the road
B) The brakes on the vehicle failed
c) Oil had been spilled on the road and the vehicle skidded
d) A tyre blew out
Do you want me to carry on?
acrowley - April 4, 2005 10:44 AM (GMT)
Your logic is faulty
e.g.
The boyracer who killed a pedestrian drove a red car
therefore
All people who drive red cars are boyracers
OR
Dangerous drivers crash
therefore
All people who crash are dangerous drivers
yams - April 4, 2005 10:53 AM (GMT)
When you've got holden and ford ads spamming on about how powerful their next cars' engines are and how better their handling is (therefore how much faster u can go while still believe u are safe), while shoving the macho v8s-makes-your-cock-bigger crap down your throat, why would the insecure male population want to slow down?
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 4, 2005 10:59 AM (GMT)
Just because you have a car that can go fast doesnt mean you have to..........
I like to think of a line from Harold and Kumar go to Whitecastle
"just because your hung like a horse, it doesnt mean you need to go into porn"
:hilarious: :hilarious: :hilarious: :hilarious: :hilarious:

liz_shaw - April 4, 2005 11:16 AM (GMT)
will you marry me kiwi hockey guy? just kidding but you and I share very similar opinions
Also people shouldn't speed because it is dangerous to other drivers.
I do think that there should be race tracks so that the guys can speed in a safe environment.
yams - April 4, 2005 11:19 AM (GMT)
so whats the point of having a fast car if you're not gonna drive it fast?
acrowley - April 4, 2005 11:20 AM (GMT)
Another one for the too hard box Liz?
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 4, 2005 11:23 AM (GMT)
Sorry i am very anti marriage----- as a previous post of mine said i have 7 gf's ha ha ha
I speed and i admit that......... but i have been getting better....... :shrugs:
Toby Turner - April 4, 2005 11:28 AM (GMT)
This is topic is tricky.
'Also people shouldn't speed because it is dangerous to other drivers.'
Thanks doctor phil. quick, tell the police, they could invent some sort of way to catch speeding drivers. Lets call it, hell i dont know, the TELEPHONE (Copyright TOBY TURNER 2005)
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 4, 2005 11:28 AM (GMT)
I spend money on my car to make it go faster so once a month or whatever i can go to pukekohe or meremere and be competitive.....
yesterday i was driving along the N/western motorway and i saw Joe Kyles skyline (fastest road registered import in NZ) he was sitting on 95-100 the whole time i saw him,..... he was being told by all the young guys in cars beside him to show off (if u know what i mean) but he didn't..... he knows what his car can do........ he knows he can beat ferari's etc but he doesnt need to show it off on the street....
(hope that made sense)
liz_shaw - April 4, 2005 11:38 AM (GMT)
Yes and what I am saying is you can speed so long as it is in a controlled setting.
The speed limits are there to save everyone's lives and prevent casualties.
And I forgot to mention, you shouldn't speed because IT IS AGAINST THE LAW.
you choose to spend that money on cars, nobody forces you to.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 4, 2005 11:42 AM (GMT)
I know it is against the law......... thats also why i have invested $800 in a radar detector and $150 in a police scanner......... since having them i have not been pulled over once for speeding..... only stupid things like exhaust volume etc....
liz_shaw - April 4, 2005 11:52 AM (GMT)
and that would be why they shouldn't be sold to the public like yourself.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 4, 2005 11:57 AM (GMT)
why is that? my radar detector also provides info on things like roadworks and accidents so you can avoid them.....
Most people who modify their cars dont just make them more powerfull they also make them safer, Larger brakes better suspension..... meaning that in many cases their car can brake sooner from 150 than your car can from 100..... and also i feel that when driving at speed i am more alert and tend to be more aware of whats happening......
yams - April 4, 2005 11:57 AM (GMT)
Obviously this Joe kyles guy is one of the more mature guys out there, otherwise he probably wont be able to drive today.
Special race tracks/drag strips, awesome. But if people could speed although they're smart enough not too, then why are we having this thread?

exactly, they are excuses for you to drive faster, to the extend of breaking the speed limit, and in the event of an accident, greatly increase the chance of killing someone.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 4, 2005 12:03 PM (GMT)
dont flame me for being honest....... you can never say you have sped? is there anything wrong with being on an open road at 110? what about countries like germany with the autobahn (roads with no speed limit) they have a cery low casualtie rate......
yams - April 4, 2005 12:08 PM (GMT)
how was that flame?
anyway, nothing wrong with 110. but as u said, 150. That is illegal, in NZ, on NZ highways.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 4, 2005 12:12 PM (GMT)
i just dont want this to head into flaming terriotory...... i was using 150 as an example....... So there is nothing wrong with 110 on an open road how about 120? or 130? where is the line in the sand if 110 is ok? I think you will find many of these cars that crash and have speed as the main fault are unsafe at 100...... they will be 20 odd years old and is old technology........
acrowley - April 4, 2005 12:17 PM (GMT)
I know where you're coming from, thats the point, its usually the self righteous who don't even drive FFS who whinge in the biggest way! Speed is always blamed, when its usually a combination of other factors. I drive to my own limits, if I get a ticket fair enough I pay up.
yams - April 4, 2005 12:18 PM (GMT)
The line is drawn im sure u know, at 100, there is already a 10kph leeway, because we would all be extremely hacked off if we we're ticketed for doing 101 or something anal like that. Someone, in their souped up car maybe comfortable with doing 130 or whatever, but notice that most ppl stay under 110. They may be not be comfortable with someone driving at 130 around them, or towards them. We can't have one road and one set of rules for high perfomance vehicles and another set for the rest.

I don't drive so I am looking on the outside in.
They shouldn't sell them because they allow you to brake the law and commit a criminal act.
I commend an applaud you for being honest as you are.
i don't think it is fair to compare NZ roads to other countries roading because we have a very different landscape and our roads are a lot narrower. We also have one of the highest car usage rates in the world.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 4, 2005 12:24 PM (GMT)
I see where u are coming from Yams....... What do you mean by FFS acrowley? I often drive at 4am on a weekday morning on the motorway....... lucky to see 3 cars some days......... so driving at 130 would be semi-ok then would it not? if i get a ticket for speeding i know im at fault.... i admit to it and pay my fine...... the only time i would get brassed off about getting a speeding ticket would be where the speed limit changes from 100 to 70 for example......... once i see that sign coming up.... i will back off the throttle and often change down a gear but i rarely brake......... (brakes are too expensive) so often i am doing 85 at the sign but i am decellerating........ this i do not believe u should be fined for.....
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 4, 2005 12:26 PM (GMT)
Liz i was using germany for an example as it proves that speed is not always the cause of accidents.......... more often than not it is crappy unsafe cars..... and people driving them as if they are in a newer car............

That is dangerous, you sound experienced but all the same, I would prefer it if the ARC would build a place where guys like yourself can race in a safe environment.
i don't want people to die like at easter weekend.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 4, 2005 12:37 PM (GMT)
building a place where guys can go and thrash the shit outa their cars will never work......
a) you will always have people that spoil the fun for everyone else
b ) ambulances are at every motorsport event.... meaning one would be needed at this ARC park
c)liabilitie for any accident would be put on the councils shoulders regardless of what disclaimers and waivers they put in place
d) rate payers would SPEW!
acrowley - April 4, 2005 12:41 PM (GMT)
Actually agreeing with you and the FFS was used in despair at people who believe that going 10, 20, 30 or even 40 Kmh over the speed limit will kill you instantly. In some circumstances there is no problem i.e. 4am on the motorway, experienced driver. I'm a safe driver and break the speed limit with a monotonous regularity.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 4, 2005 12:46 PM (GMT)
everybody does it is just a reality........ I think that the govt by changing the import laws will reduce the road toll in years to come as older cars will start bitting the dust soon and will be replace by car post 1996.... as opposed to someone importing a car that was manufactured in 1989..... and cars honestly feel a lot safer at higher speed........ they are a lot more alert and responsive.......
liz_shaw - April 4, 2005 12:49 PM (GMT)
that is true but the rate payers are the same ones who complain about the drivers being on the open roads, maybe they don't want the young guys to be safe or have fun...
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 4, 2005 12:53 PM (GMT)
ha ha ha ha the rate payers are all old anf boring! i saw we move them to hamilton.....(just the old fuddy ones that piss and moan about everything) John Banks was good like this..... I remember seeing him at meremere one day racing his Ferrari....... (he actually raced it down the 1/4 mile) and i have had bit of a trafic light grand prix race with him when he was in a porsche...... all while he was mayor!
liz_shaw - April 4, 2005 01:06 PM (GMT)
I say we move them to the south island and then they can freeze to death B)
I used to be against John Banks because I didn't support his eastern motorway plans (I still don't) but I think he is the best for the job. When there was the mayoral election I voted Christine Fletcher. I should have voted John Banks, will next time.
Then maybe auckland will get the speedway back.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 4, 2005 01:08 PM (GMT)
and the V8's........... but i didnt agree with their placement........ too much of a problem around the motorway......... but maybe down by the ports/old railway more.......... that wouldnt have caused so much of a problem.....
liz_shaw - April 4, 2005 01:13 PM (GMT)
I don't think Auckland should have the V8 based on congestion issues (re: new politics topic) but I do think we should based on population.
Maybe the city should just be closed off?
Too late now, ts gone to wellington.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 5, 2005 05:15 AM (GMT)
thank god i have family in welly........ ohh well a convoy would be fun down to wellington
