Why would adults like us want to watch some children's film or read those books for that matter? That's one movie franchise I won't go to see.

are u fucking serious? did u seem to miss the sarcasm bit at the bottom? did u have a part of your brain removed?

Harry Potter is remarkably enjoyable, whether it is the movies or the books. If you can't get out of your "OH SHIT IM SUCH A SERIOUS ADULT" mindset, then I doubt you're going to find much enjoyment in life.

The French, Templar included, will be going for Clemence Posey, so that's one extra demographic sewn up.

samf - November 11, 2005 01:14 AM (GMT)
I'd be up for this. Never seen one of these films in the cinema before (except for the second one which doesn't count because it sucked).
Steveo - November 11, 2005 05:09 AM (GMT)
Yeah I really want to see it. Can we goto a late showing coz I dont finish work till 5.30
Maliekieth - November 11, 2005 05:11 AM (GMT)
Late showing on friday/sat is all good, providing the train goes near it (should really get onto getting my license...)
El Matador - November 11, 2005 05:15 AM (GMT)
I dont read the books or see the films but I'm keen for goon culture. Late night? sure.
DnB007 - November 14, 2005 09:51 AM (GMT)

Maliekieth - November 14, 2005 09:53 AM (GMT)
You have to admit that the actor who plays harry is a raging gimp. I'd be tempted to crush his face if I ever met him.
the oob - November 14, 2005 10:53 AM (GMT)
Once the time/place is sorted post it. Although I have no interest in the movie I'll go anyway out of extreme boredom... I've read the first book so that should help somewhat.
samf - November 14, 2005 11:03 AM (GMT)
Good on you, oob. I've read the first book only and seen all the movies to date, so I consider myself fairly up with the play (I'll read a few more of the novels before the screening).
templar34 - November 14, 2005 08:21 PM (GMT)
Emma Watson is jailbait :(
sdr - November 15, 2005 01:02 AM (GMT)
Speaking of jailbait, last night I found out this girl who I thought was pretty mint is 15 and likes me. I hope they let me post here from prison.
So who's keen to see this Thursday after next after dinner time?
Yeliah - November 16, 2005 07:12 AM (GMT)
Okay. First of all. I don't knwo how many times I have to say this, but the Harry Potter books aren't really about the children anymore. I guess they sort of were at the start, but not really now. It's because Rowling writes from Harry's perspective. And he's 17 now in the books. It's not innocent, and it doesn't have to be. Rowling has explicitily explained that she doesn't write for children. She writes for herself. Her books are not written in black and white - like most children's novels - they have many mysterious shades of grey - a concept that 5 year olds find very hard to grasp. "But isn't he a baddie if he killed that man, Daddy?" Umm...
Most of the films - or at least the first two - that have been adapted from the books were done so by Disney directors. Maybe this is because in the first couple of the series Harry is only 10/11 yrs old. Anyway, in the third film, Alfonso Cuaron (director of Y Tu Mama Tambien) took over as director and the film/storyline/characters became a lot more 3 dimensional. Well, as 3 dimensional as they can be when you have actors such as Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe to deal with on a daily basis. Rupert Grint is pretty good, though.
Anyway, in this fourth film, most parents have been advised that this is a fuckload darker than anything else - preodminantly due to seeing characters being killed off first hand and Voldemort rising/torturing/killing etc. It's far more sinister.
Shit. Okay, yes, you all know now that I'm a gayballs about Harry Potter but I don't give a shit. Samf, you should maybe try reading the series starting at perhaps the third in the series. The first two are too crap, and Rowling repeats the main/important pieces of information at the start of it anyway. GOF is where the series really begins to take off. It's the turning point of the whole series. And far off from being a shitload of childish bollocks, thanks very much Hitler.

So who's keen to see this Thursday after next after dinner time? |
I'm keen to come along, but it depends heavily on how late 'after dinner'. On a Thursday the last train out west is about 8:20. Early in the evening (5-5:45ish) is alright, but any later and I will be pushing it to make that train, especially if its a long movie. Friday would be *much* better, as I have the option of staying in town until midnight!
Harry Potter may not be classed as the greatest literature in the whole world, but its pretty enjoyable, and thats all that really matters..
Yeliah - November 16, 2005 07:21 AM (GMT)
I can see it at anytime next Thursday, but Friday I don't finish work until at least 6:30. Also, which cinema? Because it's relatively easy for me to get into twon (Queen St), but St Lukes is a pain in the ass.
Fez - November 16, 2005 07:26 AM (GMT)
Yea Thursday is better for me too, Fri Im working 6-9
I dont mind either town or st lukes, if its in town after 6 would be good so I can get free parking.
Steveo - November 16, 2005 08:00 AM (GMT)
St lukes would be better for me, I could prob drop people at westgate if need be
Synopsis - November 16, 2005 10:02 AM (GMT)
Thursday is good for me. I'd perfer town because I don't know where St Lukes is but I can find it if I need to.

Maliekieth - November 16, 2005 10:30 AM (GMT)
Fucking cheers man, that would be primo. If you want gas money or anything give me a yell and I can hook you up.
I will be in town most likely due to work on Thursday, so any time after 5ish is good (though I can leave early if need be, work is flexible as).
sdr - November 16, 2005 11:50 AM (GMT)
I think the books have all been consistent in their maturity level. It's a 'PG' series. I don't think they started out childish either. Consider this:
| QUOTE (JK Rowling) |
| You're right, it is an intense message, but I am ultimately writing about evil, and I have said before, I think, that I'm surprised when sometimes people say to me, “Oh, you know, the books are getting so dark.” I'm thinking, “Well, which part of ‘Philosopher's Stone’ did you think was light and fluffy?” You know, there is an innocence about it, Harry is very young when he goes to the school, but the book opens with a double murder. The possibility of death, I think, is present throughout “Philosopher’s Stone,” and I feel that there are a couple of really gruesome images in “Philosopher’s Stone.” I think the first book contains more gruesome imagery than the second, despite the giant snake, because the cloaked figure drinking the unicorn blood is pretty damn creepy. It was to me when I thought of it, and I really, right up until now, all these years later, think that the idea of the face in the back of the head [Voldemort sharing Quirrell’s body] is one of the most disturbing images in the whole book. (The whole book; I call it one big book. In the whole series.) |
Yeah I know, you said 'sort of' not out right childish, so I want to goad the resident Harry Potter nerd into a debate. Sue me.
OK so we have a split between people that want Thursday and those that want Friday.
