Title: Good Books

Adolf Chiang - November 3, 2005 10:31 AM (GMT)
Since we've made threads about movies and music, let's not neglect one the most important medias of all time- books. Let this be a thread dedicated to good books we've read. Any one got any recommendations?

templar34 - November 3, 2005 07:46 PM (GMT)
Magician - Raymond Fiest
The Broken God - David Zindell
Earthsea Quartet - Ursula le Guin

Anything by HP Lovecraft
Anything by Raymond Chandler

Hannoir - November 3, 2005 07:55 PM (GMT)
Naked - David Sedaris
The Art of Travel - Alain de Botton

They are my faves in NZ; I'd have to look at my bookshelf at home to remember the rest.

Happy Ahmed - November 3, 2005 08:09 PM (GMT)
Shantaram - Gregory David Roberts.

I cannot urge people to read this strongly enough.

alice and through the looking glass. by Lewis carrol. just cos you have seen the movie doesnt mean you know the story cos you dont.

hitchhikers's guide to the galaxy, douglas adams. one of the only books to make me laugh out loud lol.

Ian m bank's the wasp factory. its awesome psychological coolness. very odd in some parts.

Stark (Ben Elton)
This Other Eden (Ben Elton)
Both 'end is nigh/humans are a bit mad' comedic type genre (if such a genre exists).

samf - November 6, 2005 11:31 AM (GMT)

EDIT: Whoops, posted not knowing what the shit I was on about. Disregard.

Adolf Chiang - November 6, 2005 09:03 PM (GMT)
Samf, how good is the noir novel with Mr. Bland in it?

templar34 - November 6, 2005 09:18 PM (GMT)
Digital Fortress, Dan Brown, is crap, but redeemed only slightly by a fair amount of cryptography, which is cool.

Adolf Chiang - November 6, 2005 09:22 PM (GMT)
For fiction, I tend to go for war novels and thrillers. How well written is Brown's 'Da Vinci Code'?

I liked it. As long as you read it expecting some light entertainment you will be fine. I found it quite captivating though. Even if it was a bit predictable.

It was captivating and predictable, I guess light entertainment is about right for it. Read it on the plane over here, filled the time for sure.

As long as you don't take Dan Browns books too seriously they're pretty enjoyable.

Finally I got hold of the new Pratchett 'Thud!'. It took my partner a week to read it godammit!

The conspiracies have been disproven. That book may not have found favor with the Vatican but they should thank Brown for the increased number of tourists to see the sights mentioned in the book.

Ooh ooh! I know! Harry Potter!

:goatse:

P.S. Senor, his sense of humour philistinic for the likes of Adams.

Do not read Angels and Demons by Dan Brown.

The most batshit insane and ridiculous story ever.

Maliekieth - November 24, 2005 12:29 AM (GMT)
If you like sci-fi pick up some of Peter Hamilton's books.

I fully reccomend the Nights Dawn Trilogy:
-Reality Dysfunction
-Neutronium Alchemist
-The Naked God (not 100% on that, my memory is fuzzy today)

and his new 2 book series:
-Pandora's Star
-Judas Unchained

These aren't exactly light reading - they are around a 1000 pages each, but in my opinion, they are bloody good.

I finished re-reading Clarke's Rama series. first couple of books are kinda slow and appeal only to sci-fi junkies, but it has some nice mindfuck revelations at the end.

templar34 - November 24, 2005 12:06 PM (GMT)
Just read Planet of the Apes - Pierre Boulle. Awesomely good science fiction book, better than movies.

samf - November 25, 2005 04:11 AM (GMT)

Currently reading 'Tarzan Presley' by Nigel Cox. It's just genius. Go read it.
