Dearer diesel, higher wages push up bus fares 27.10.05 By Nicola Boyes
Bus users in Auckland have been given three days' notice of a 10 per cent fare rise which will result in some passengers paying up to $1.50 more per trip.
The 10 per cent average increase approved by the Auckland Regional Transport Authority will start on Sunday as bus companies update their fares.
The authority will review rail and ferry operating costs, which could mean users of those services will pay more for their journeys.
The bus fare increase follows an annual review of service costs and is attributed to higher diesel prices and wages. Fares last went up in August last year when they rose by 8 per cent.
The latest increase will hit around 150,000 passengers who use the buses each day.
New fares have yet to be set for Birkenhead Transport and Ritchies Transport but are now confirmed for Howick and Eastern Buses, Urban Express, Waiheke Buses and Stagecoach.
Casual passengers will find fares go up on each stage apart from the inner city 50c ride.
The city's Link service will cost $1.50, up from $1.30, while casual child and senior citizen fares rise between 10c and 70c, depending on how many stages are travelled.
Weekly and monthly fares will also increase, with one stage concession tickets rising go up $1.50 from $11.50 to $13, while two stage concession tickets will go up $3 and three stage tickets increase $4. |
What the hell is wrong with this country? Falling numbers? Let's ramp the fucking price!
Words fail me.

I was just about to paste the same story.
Ah, oil.
El Matador - October 26, 2005 07:50 PM (GMT)
Nevertheless, I am still pissed off to find my monthly pass has no tertiary discount whatsoever.
Steveo - October 26, 2005 08:21 PM (GMT)
Fucking hell.
I drive to uni and pay for parking, taking wear & tear and petrol for the car its still about $2 cheaper per day taking the car. Now its going to be even cheaper.
Hannoir - October 26, 2005 08:41 PM (GMT)
As I just said to sloanie, I'd all encourage you to complain to AUSA/bus companies about this.
Fez - October 26, 2005 10:09 PM (GMT)
It was bound to happen with rising oil prices, Im just glad they waited till uni finished to do it. Good job stagecoach.
But damn, youre right Steveo, time to recalculate it costs to use the car per week now, because I think thats a viable option now.
Maybe we should all carpool? :)

Yea but none of you buggers are elitist enough to live on the Central East Side.
Represent.
Stage coach has technically raised the price to $103, they've eaten $4 out of the 4x10 rides V Monthly pass benefit.
Jaded Mandarin - October 26, 2005 10:22 PM (GMT)
Where does it say A Zone passes will cost $99? That's well above the fucken 10% average increase.
El Matador - October 26, 2005 10:32 PM (GMT)
My point exactly. I believe the Single Zone Monthly Passes are subbing the Children's price rises.

Since I'm not a Stagecoach user, I have nothing to worry about. I was quite sympathetic to their poor customers during their last major strike a few months back.
Hauser - October 27, 2005 06:24 AM (GMT)
You're sympathetic to their poor customers during the last strike? I'm a Stagecoach user, and I was sympathetic for the drivers.
This is fucking ridiculous: the company had record profits last year, they are paid a huge subsidy by the regional government to keep their services running and their executive (who is in New Zealand for two months a year or so) got a 6 figure bonus ... yet my understanding is their pay increase for drivers is MINISCULE, and now they fucking raise prices: tis there something wrong here?
That sole socialist councillor on the Auckland Regional Council was actually talking sense for once in their life when they started the campaign for having free public busses. Fuck Stagecoach.

I wonder how long it will be befire Stage coach raise the fullers Ferry fares (stagecoach own fullers)
When they do this, I will buy many tertiary 10 rides... hahahahaha gimps...!
trix - October 27, 2005 07:34 AM (GMT)
I don't get the bus because it costs twice as much and takes more than twice as long as driving.
From Arana Drive, Karaka to Auckland University Library

Total Fare: $12.40 return (after price increases = $13.20)

At $99 a month, it's still just marginally cheaper for me to get the bus than to drive in. I'd have to pay for parking all day as well as at least $20 a week for petrol, and I come in to uni every day Monday to Friday.
But it's a close run thing. I like Stagecoach's logic! "We're losing patrons because our services are over-priced and most people drive, so let's just jack up the fares till we have noone on our buses at all!"

Probably but the Waikato Uni 'bar' doesnt serve Red Bull or Jägermeister - they offered lift plus with vodka as an alternative, eww. I once went to a keg party in their student union building and the beer ran out in the middle of a boat race tournament.

Nice!
Good to see we have our educational priorities very similar to one another!
