OK, well if you pull the side of your case off you should see something like this. Take a photo and post it or just tell us what it says

Steveo - October 31, 2005 11:08 PM (GMT)
300w output

él_bronto - October 31, 2005 11:28 PM (GMT)
How much on the 12V line?

Steveo - October 31, 2005 11:55 PM (GMT)
15amps

él_bronto - November 1, 2005 12:39 AM (GMT)
Hmm that's a tad low. Also does it have a plug like this (the one on the right)? That feeds the CPU on newer systems and is essential I think. If so you should be OK going to a 3200+ type system with a semi powerful graphics card, but if is a bit unstable the PSU might be to blame (it's not always windows and uncle bill's dodgy programming)

templar34 - November 1, 2005 12:46 AM (GMT)
Heh image leeching.

Steveo - November 1, 2005 01:53 AM (GMT)
How much for a new PSU that will do the trick

él_bronto - November 1, 2005 07:07 AM (GMT)
~$100, but you should be able to get by on that one.

Google image search for the win on image leeching :evil8:

Yes it does have one of those plugs. Wicked.

So Processor : AMD 3200+ 64 (socket 939, venice core) ~$250
Ram : x2 512 DDR400(??) ~$150
Motherboard : MSI K8N Neo2-FX Motherboard, Socket 939(?) ~$160
/Gigabyte K8NSC ~$135

from pp

http://www.pp.co.nz/ProductsD.php?pp_id=CP00085 $294
http://www.pp.co.nz/ProductsI.php?pp_id=MB00487 $164
http://www.pp.co.nz/ProductsI.php?pp_id=MB00051 $138
http://www.pp.co.nz/ProductsJ.php?pp_id=MEM00327 $180

about 600 bucks :hmm:

él_bronto - November 1, 2005 08:47 AM (GMT)
Well I think that gigabyte one I mentioned earlier would be fine. It's nice and cheap and should do the job.

Yeah you want ddr400. The Twinmos dual channel pack thing is about $150 on pricespy and is all you need.

Make sure the cpu is socket 939 and venice core. You can tell this by reading some numbers off the box thing when you buy it.

All up should be just over $500. Stick a newer graphics card in it ASAP, the 6600gt can now be had for under $250 and I'm sure the latest generation will spit out a similiar bargain.

Whats a good motherboard? I want to keep my agp card for another half a year or so.

Maliekieth - November 1, 2005 09:56 AM (GMT)
I have this board MSI Neo2-FX , and so far I am happy with it. This board is a more expensive version of mine.

Something like this Gigabyte K8NSC or a slightly more 'gadgety' version like this Gigabyte K8NS Ultra would work as well.

All 3 are socket 939 nforce3 boards, which means they have onboard LAN, AGP, and the more expensive versions have extra stuff like firewire and RAID.

Steveo - November 1, 2005 09:58 AM (GMT)
I would like something that can do pci-express too, or should I just get another motherboard later on down the track?

i think : MSI K8N Neo2-FX Motherboard, Socket 939
might do the trick

él_bronto - November 1, 2005 10:40 AM (GMT)
That MSI board is very nice. Consider this though if you're cheap.

As far as pci-e/agp goes, there are very few boards that do both, and Jack of all trades... I'd stick with agp. You'll be able to buy a very nice agp graphics card in 6 months that will be nicely balanced with the rest of your hardware. By the time you have to buy a pci express graphics card because there are no other options you will be needing to buy a new motherboard anyway

Steveo - November 1, 2005 08:23 PM (GMT)
so wahts the difference between the msi & gigabyte?

Maliekieth - November 1, 2005 11:42 PM (GMT)
The only major difference is the MSI board has 4 SATA plugs rather than the Gigabytes 2. Chances are the two manufacturers use different suppliers for components and the like. Otherwise, its just a matter of personal preference in manufacturer.

I chose the MSI board as it had decent reviews, and fit in my price range. I was originally looking at the Gigabyte board as my other option as well lol.

Steveo - November 2, 2005 02:07 AM (GMT)
Righto, msi board it is. Sweet, turns out im selling my current comp to the sister (without graphics card), so thats some more $$

él_bronto - November 8, 2005 10:58 PM (GMT)
How did it go?

Steveo - November 9, 2005 05:07 AM (GMT)
I got taht msi board and 2x 512 sticks and a 3200+ 64 venice core. Its rad, havnt played any games yet as ive been updating drivers etc etc. Excellent
