Title: C&c

Adolf Chiang - October 18, 2005 09:52 PM (GMT)
I feel like we should dedicate an entire thread one of the greatest series of games of all time. I used to be a C&C junky.

templar34 - October 18, 2005 10:37 PM (GMT)
StarCraft FTW :cloak:

[ZOMG zerglings kekekekekekekeke]

Adolf Chiang - October 18, 2005 11:52 PM (GMT)
I'ver played SC before and didn't like it. Don't know why...

I tend to like games that have a soundtrack that fits the gaming experience. That's one of the reasons why I don't particularly enjoy SC or OFP as much as playing MOHPA or C&C.

templar34 - October 19, 2005 12:06 AM (GMT)
Well then, now we've got content :P

Forum threads are nothing without content. And I never really enjoyed C&C. Dawn of War, on the other hand...

samf - October 19, 2005 02:43 AM (GMT)

I'm a philistine, but I really enjoyed C&C Red Alert. It's still a diverting timewaster on my old computer.

Steveo - October 19, 2005 03:11 AM (GMT)
Shit, ive still got Synopsis's copy of Tiberium Sun, ill drop it off after exams :P

Adolf Chiang - October 19, 2005 03:49 AM (GMT)
To be honest, I think it was C&C Red Alert (being one the first games I played) that introduced me to this interest in warfare. The first pieces of music that I seriously listened to were from RA. Then it just sort of expanded onto classical, and so forth.

samf - October 19, 2005 03:50 AM (GMT)

C&C Red Alert was my first introduction to socialism in any form. Though I've never really dug the politics I've always been fascinated by the language, the look, all those reds and golds...

templar34 - October 19, 2005 04:08 AM (GMT)
Da, tovarich.

I should really learn more Russian :( it's an undervalued 1/8th of my heritage.

I've always hated communism long before RA. I like to run over Red soldiers whenever I have the chance in OFP.

I personally prefer to live in the Tiberian universe (C&C original), since the Red Alert world is far-fetched and I'm drawn to the power and mystique of Kane.

This guy at uni is 1/4 Russian but he looks 100% Chinese. He was from the Sino-Soviet border up north.

samf - October 19, 2005 04:28 AM (GMT)

I was surprised to meet an old woman at the supermarket who looked 100% Russian but spoke only Mandarin (and halting English). There's some really interesting cross-cultural stuff happening on that border.

Adolf Chiang - October 19, 2005 04:31 AM (GMT)
You won't meet any Indians mixed with Tibetans on the Himalyan border since they definitely hate each other.

Damn right, for once you are talking sense Chiang! I never worked out why I didn't like Starcraft, but I just didn't, and I sure as hell loved C&C (the first one, I think which was officially called Tiberian Dawn, and also definitely Red Alert).

As Samf said, Red Alert was also my introduction to Socialism. When I first started playing the game, for various reasons including our sole encyclopedia in my house being from the mid 1980's, I thought socialism was very mighty and the Soviet Union and entire Eastern Bloc still existed. It was a very depressing, rude awakening when I discovered that the USSR had fallen years before, and that those mighty MiGs that you would have to manually guide up the side of the water (to avoid SAM sites and strategically placed rocket troops) to blow the shit out of vital parts of the enemy base. So many failed missions, yet the awesomeness that you felt when you were playing against the Allies and you blew up their Satellite/Map command centre, destroying their map. :ph43r:

Glorious times! :ninja:

Adolf Chiang - October 19, 2005 06:53 AM (GMT)
Glad to know that there's another C&C fan in here! I loved every C&C game ever made, including 'Renegade' (Westwood's first FPS) and 'Generals' (not made by Westwood), just the whole C&C logo brings sheer l33tness.

I was one of those that played RA before Tiberian Dawn, so I tend to hold bias towards the original RA as the better game. TD isn't bad since the videos and storyline is more bad ass.

I like playing Nod because I liked the Obelisks of Light. 'Renegade' is even more adrenaline pumping than the average RTS, but what I don't like is that the tech is 2030s, as oppsed the original TD where soldiers wore kevlar and had M16s (sort of like 2010s).

Then came 'Tiberian Sun', it didn't quite live up to the C&C name because the world was completely transformed by further Tiberium ravages, not having Mammoth Tanks was a real blow to the game play. RA2 had many good units but the comic storyline simply didn't work. 'Generals' provided much visual eye candy, but the bias was obvious towards the U.S.

With most of Westwood's former employees finding the company Petroglyph, I wish they could remake the original TD to the standard of 'Generals', blur the weapon technology lines a bit to the level of 'Renegade' and it'll be the 'Doom 3' of RTS!

I sometimes wish that I'm a GDI general fighting the forces of Nod. Bring the A-10s with napalm!

Steveo - October 19, 2005 07:07 AM (GMT)
I liked RA2 best and the expansion, infact does anyone have a copy of that i can borrow or they can make me a copy?

Adolf Chiang - October 19, 2005 07:11 AM (GMT)
Since Kane is my favorite fictional dictator, I'm going to change my avatar to his picture since I'm overwhelmed by the sheer C&C nostalgia I'm facing. Hail Kane!

Hauser - October 19, 2005 07:16 AM (GMT)
Steveo I can't find my CDs but if I come across the RA2 (regular game, not expansion) CD i'll give it you to at the BBQ.

Chiang, I agree Kane kicked arse. I couldn't stand playing as the GDI, they were boring (just like everyone apart from the GLA in Generals: I love improvising using really shit stuff in the game) compared to NOD.

Seeing that image of Kane in your picture really is bringing back memories...

Steveo - October 19, 2005 07:18 AM (GMT)

Since it was released during the War on Terror, EA can't help but portray the GLA as supposedly "oppressed" rather than hardcore Islamic fundies. My favorite Chinese units would be the MiG-31s and the ability to deploy mines.

Back in my hardcore C&C playing days, I could impersonate the voices of almost every unit in RA, C&C, TS and RA2. I could even do EVA (the only female voice I'm capable of) and CABAL.

Hauser - October 19, 2005 07:32 AM (GMT)
haha yes many a day was spent in the primary school yard with my friends pretending to be C&C units.

EDIT: Plus didn't the C&C music KICK ARSE?

I didn't start playing C&C until I was about 12 since I didn't have a PC before. Wow! Playing C&C in primary school? Wouldn't all those videos just warp your young minds?

Fuck yeah! I still listen to the C&C soundtracks from time to time, I've got this link that has all the C&C and RA songs on mp3 for download!

TD Soundtrack:

http://www.cncworld.org/downloads/pafiledb...=category&id=22

'Rain in the Night' really captures the mood of being indoors during an evening downpour, although I can imagine soldiers staying put during a SE Asian monsoon in the jungle.

RA Soundtrack:

It would awesome if I could get 'Hell March' as my cellphone ringtone! The lyrics are so simple, "we want war, wake up!"

Hauser - October 19, 2005 08:11 AM (GMT)
Yeah C&C totally fucked me up. I first played it when I was seven on my cousin's PC (at this stage our computer was too primitive to run anything, I think it was an Amiga), and from then on it was serious addiction, including Red Alert, until I was about 11. I still have been playing Red Alert multiplayer since then with friends of mine, at least until I left high school. Lot's of fun.

Cheers for those links, I'm downloading them right now!

Steveo - October 19, 2005 08:15 AM (GMT)
I remember playing C&C modem with my mate, ringing each other up "dude im going to call u in 2 minutes turn your modem on!". Then it progresed to RA and then Starcraft, oh we also played diablo :D
This was bakc in the day before the internet and piracy and cd writers so we actually bought games B)

Hauser - October 19, 2005 08:18 AM (GMT)
Hahaha yeah that whole fucking modem thing seems so cool looking back, yet at the time was a pain in the arse eh!

Our golden youth, the glorious run of innocence before the internet perverted us all...

Steveo - October 19, 2005 08:20 AM (GMT)
speak for yourself, im still as innocent as a sweet lamb :)

templar34 - October 19, 2005 08:26 AM (GMT)
That's not what your mum told me last night, Steveo.

I never really got into C&C, as I spent the majority of my youth gaming on a Mac. I know, laugh. I'll still pwn you at any FPS.

Ah, oob, but you haven't flamed me for being a mac user, have you?

the oob - October 19, 2005 08:41 AM (GMT)
It would be redundant, Mac users are already 'flaming', if you know what I mean.

Nah! Kane resembles Chiang Kai-shek after shaving off his moustache. I once joked to some other C&C fans about how at least half of the Nod personnel could be skinheads.

I think the best mission design in a C&C game goes to TS for having a good variety. When a man gets sick of building bases, you get small unit action with varying objectives.

The major flaw of C&C games is that the weapon systems can be either far-fetched (flame tanks, mammoth tanks, desolators, etc.) to down right unrealistic (Nod artilleries firing a lot further than GDI MLRS, which is completely opposite to real world systems). 'Generals' sort of tied that up a bit but it was still unreal. The biggest flaw of all would be how personnel in hummers can fire from gun ports while terrorists riding on the backs of pickup trucks (technicals) are unable to do the same.

Hauser - October 20, 2005 09:03 AM (GMT)
Chiang, we should find the actor who played Kane by emailing EA (or whoever owns Westwood these days) and get him to say shit for us.

Well, it would be interesting to see what he's doing these days and whether he still has a shaven head.

There's not much info about him on IMDB:

Apart from acting as Kane, Mr. Kucan directs the C&C movie clips.
