Title: My Degree Is Better Than Yours
Description: nah neh nah neh nah nah

I can sense some kind of force bubbling away within the underbelly of the forum, threatening to erupt at any moment. Specific instances would include here and here.

So let's get it out in the open, and despite the emotive and childish language I've used in this post, keep it calm and reasonable.

I'll kick it off:

Theoretical physics is the hardest thing you can do at uni

Hannoir - October 12, 2005 12:30 PM (GMT)
Fuck off.

When I graduate I
1) graduate from one of the top undergrad business sch programs in the UK
2) will have done a year abroad. already means i mean im godl also im doing my year abroad at on of the top universities in the world (apparently being in U21 means auckland/birmingham are "top") so that makes me special.

yep i win. fuck you all. if i get a first ill be fucking you all with cream and choolate on top. im looking forward to it (ps not going to get first. so you will have to wooooo me in other ways.)

Hannoir - October 12, 2005 08:04 PM (GMT)
That was obnoxious. I'm sorry.

But its true :)

Steveo - October 12, 2005 08:09 PM (GMT)
I refuse to partake in this argument

Happy Ahmed - October 12, 2005 08:09 PM (GMT)
I'm doing two professional degrees at once and not conjointly.

This makes me way hard.

Sardonic - October 12, 2005 08:13 PM (GMT)
Dr. Sardonic

Game over!

El Matador - October 12, 2005 08:24 PM (GMT)
I will say that keeping you cunts out of prison will probably prove extremely lucrative, be it for crimes or for tax evasion.

Hauser - October 12, 2005 09:28 PM (GMT)
You pack of softcocks all pale in comparison to my double major BA degree.

You doing a PhD in hilariosophy Sardonic?

I think I could agree with that. I failed at stage 2 physics, I failed hard.

the oob - October 12, 2005 09:49 PM (GMT)
Hands up whoever has actually finished their degree, rather than gloating over something they haven't even accomplished yet.

*puts hand up*

Maus - October 12, 2005 09:52 PM (GMT)
My hand is up.

Happy Ahmed - October 12, 2005 09:54 PM (GMT)
Two degrees at the end of this semester, bitches.

But I have completed enough papers for an ME and then some.

Really? Usually they require an original contribution to the discipline.

Oooh touche.

templar34 - October 12, 2005 10:16 PM (GMT)
Well, I'm muddling along in Physics and CompSci. I don't think I have the discipline to maintain both of them as a major. Even as I write this I'm still in bed when I should be in a lecture.

Any second year paper is harder than first year. I maintain that as true.

Some of this may be wrong :P

All majors are different. Theoretical physics requires that you can understand things that don't make sense. Engineering is a lot of mathematical manipulation (I think?), Architecture is fuckloads of time in a studio designing things. BFA requires sssooo much attention to what you're doing - ask my girlfriend, who's panicking about not finishing her stuff on time.

Most BAs actually teach you how to analyse things. History especially, as you have to see the motives and what they were hoping to gain. Languages are a pain if you haven't done them before.

My $0.02.

/edit: Commerce is a joke. It's applied maths with some philosophy thrown in masquerading as law.

BA majoring in FTVMS. Your degree really is better than my degree. At least I enjoy it, sort of.

Boy Wonder - October 13, 2005 02:27 AM (GMT)
Sardonic did you do medicine?

I think Ahmed wins. Unless you average it out over years taken.

doing a double major BA i think. its fun. i really dont give a shit that i might be stuck in a crap job at the end of it, hey i love the job i already have. i love english. hopefully drama and theatre studies will be as much fun. and just for the record: just coz someone is doing a BA doesnt mean they suck at maths/science, i was always one of the top at maths at all my schools before i figured out that i hated it.
i maintain that if i wanted to, and had put in effort, i could be doing a 'worthwhile' degree, and doing bloody well at it. im actually not as stupid as i come across.

You do not need a business degree to go into business. I know of at least two chief executives with either no degree, or a non-business degree.

Engineering is more about design and management than mathematical manipulation, unless you hit engineering science or biomedical engineering. Those two specialisations are heavily based on modelling things mathematically.

Engineering (to me) seems to be more orientated towards thinking a problem through, and ensuring any solution to it is useable, safe, and economical to produce and maintain.

In my opinion, its also a career degree, you do it so you have a degree that can get you a decently paying job, and also provide a bit of flexibility to move around into areas you want. This is a constrast to what I see as interest degree (ie many of the arts papers). I loved english (writing) at school, and I would probably enjoy taking some english papers at uni, but I don't see it paying for all the expensive toys I want, so I might come back and look at it postgrad, or write a book when I'm on a decent salary.

Virtual High Five. (Even if we disagree on 'Closer'.)

Find Dale. I'm sure he can promptly stain a nice big <E> on your shoulder. Otherwise, may I suggest you indulge in a little branding? All the cool kids are doing it...

El Matador - October 13, 2005 07:10 AM (GMT)
The guy across the road from me started out as a tow truck driver. He's done pretty well for himself.

Happy Ahmed - October 13, 2005 07:18 AM (GMT)
One of my degrees is Civil Engineering.

It pretty much sucks.

Maliekieth - October 13, 2005 07:36 AM (GMT)
You have to be a special kind of person to find bridges and buildings interesting, fuck knows I disliked statics, and the truss project.

Adolf Chiang - October 13, 2005 07:50 AM (GMT)
I'm heading straight for civil engineering since they say its the easiest and it also has the greatest employment opportunities amongst all the engineering disciplines. As for mechanical or chemmat, you might have to go overseas since there aren't many industries here.

Civil Engineering would suit you. It is boring and tedious. As for Chemical Engineering, there are plenty of industries in New Zealand, you just have to look at the Dairy and Forestry industries, the aluminium plant in Invercargill, Steel Mills along west coast of Norrth Island various, food, beverage and packaging places etc. Having said that, I'll probably go overseas anyway for better money.
Also, someone told me that Chemical Engineering is the 3rd hardest degree at the ASPA awards. I have no idea where she got her information from but I'll believe her anyway

Adolf Chiang - October 13, 2005 08:41 PM (GMT)
I don't see how civil is ever boring, considering its popularity and substantially large intake. I don't bloody want to work for Fonterra!
