Title: Cellphone Bans

so it turns out that despite the usage, which is high, most people, 75.6% want hand held phones banned from cars. 38% are in favour of a prohibiton of fixed phones.

I am personally against cellphone usage in cars as driving is already bad enough in this country without the added distraction of cellphones.

If you are a driver have you used a cellphone when driving?

Synopsis - April 2, 2005 10:57 AM (GMT)
Once when I was stuck in traffic on the South Auckland motorway and was late for work.

Normally if my phone rings I shout "Fuck off!" and keep on driving.

AC la - April 2, 2005 11:03 AM (GMT)
Only ban male using cellphones when driving la :P

Cos female can multitask while male cant :P

kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 11:30 AM (GMT)
                at least we can pee standing up with out making a mess!

AC la - April 2, 2005 11:31 AM (GMT)
hahaha true

p.s. i'm a guy la :o

liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 11:34 AM (GMT)
so if a cellphone ban was imposed do you think it would work? or do you think people would disobey it? and how could we ensure that it did work?

Synopsis - April 2, 2005 11:43 AM (GMT)
Oh people would disobey it. No doubt about it.

AC la - April 2, 2005 11:49 AM (GMT)
I think the only ways to implement it is to:

1. Fine on sight.
2. Force drivers to buy handfree kits...

I agree with fines on site but this would require more police, something the government is failing at getting.

Maybe we should only import cars that do have a handsfree kit or have it so that the car yard has to put it in. They have put into cars these things that prevent it being thieved, you have to buy it now.

kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 11:56 AM (GMT)
its like the law they implemented about wearing helmets while riding bikes....... when has that even been enforced? or the council bi-laws with window washers (ohhh if i could run them over i would) people would not obey them at all...... Police should b fighting real crimes not handing out tickets for cell phone use.... what about them with their radios in their cars....... would they be allowed to use them?

kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 11:57 AM (GMT)
cant really do that liz because there are so many different brands of cell phones and companys update phones so often........ maybe the headsets like earphones or the bluetooth headsets...

yams - April 2, 2005 11:57 AM (GMT)
free installation of handsets and subisidies maybe?

handset checks for WOF?

liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 11:59 AM (GMT)
the police radios are effectively hands free and they are life or death potentially, thus being the difference.

With cellphone usage there have been 17 deaths per year on average as a result. It is in the same league as drink driving as that article stated so it is a problem and it does matter. They are putting other people's lives in danger for the reasons stated in the speeding thread in the news section.

Helmets, yes that was implemented when I was 8 and I occasionally see it being disobeyed but more often that not it is obeyed.

The problem isn't within punishable offences, the problem is with there not being enough law enforcers.

How else can we implement this cellphone ban then? By chaining wrist of every driver and zap them with 1000 volt electricity the instant they try to use the cellphone?

kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 12:03 PM (GMT)
they have to hold a mouth peice up while driving this is attached by a cord to the dash....... which to me is more dangerous that a cellphone... and these radios are often used for general chit chat..... they also carry cellphones which they use....

yams - April 2, 2005 12:04 PM (GMT)
having such draconian measures as laws and fines will hardly have a chance of working out with the public, and it won't help the police's image either. Whats needed are promotional campaigns and incentives for alternatives. It like the antispeeding campaigns.

AC la - April 2, 2005 12:06 PM (GMT)
Usually there will be 2 people in each police car though, so 1 person will handle all the communication and the other person drives... I'm pretty sure of that

liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 12:10 PM (GMT)
Yeah that is the case most of the time with the police.

I am in agreement with campaigns warning people of the dangers of driving with cellphones in the form of tv ads, radio ads and billboard ads for those who hate broadcast media.

kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 12:11 PM (GMT)
that happens when there are 2 officers in the car which in auckland only really tends to be at night..... most police i see the cars only have 1 officer in the car... then there are the dog handlers etc they are always alone (apart from their dog in the back)

liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 12:14 PM (GMT)
Is that entirely safe? Not in my opinion? I think it should be the law that all police officers must travel in tandem but I suppose they do when they are going to a massive call out or something.

they would still use it no matter what.

There are technologies out there that can be used with out taking the hands off the wheel.

Bluetooth or the traditional handsfree kit can be very easy to use and access.
Most of the ppl i know, use it.

Again the ban should be targeted towards teens, not that all are useless fcks.

re #1 , its not practical

AC la - April 2, 2005 12:20 PM (GMT)
Not really, as teens tend to txt not phone...

Now now, txt while driving is definitely 10 times more dangerous than driving while talking on the cellphone

(Yes i've done it once on the motorway :P)

yams - April 2, 2005 12:21 PM (GMT)
well, stretched as they are now....

Bus and taxi drivers have to handle BC radios too, and they have no co-pilot to help out. Thing with BC radio is that the communication is short and to the point. Cell phone conv are usually much longer and about a variety of topics taht can quickly draw away a driver's attention.

kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 12:22 PM (GMT)
if they did that..... there would be 1/2 the amount of patrols around..... (yeah less chance of a ticket for me) but it comes down to staffing issues and practicality i suppose...... I have a lot of respect for the police staff in the comms centre....... if you have ever listened to a scanner (radio that picks up police signals) you will realise how much work these people do....... the real unsung backbone of the police force.....

(not the 111 people that send you a taxi if you being raped or whatever)

the actual support for the front line cops

liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 12:24 PM (GMT)
Then I guess hands free kits are the way of the future. That makes it safer for people. That I am fine with.

So do we just disallow texting or is it one of those things that we just can't do anything about, you see to catch someone whilst doing it would take a lot of police resources and would require patrolling areas over a period of time and trying to catch people, you may nto catch anyone thus the cop's time is wasted.

Traffic wardens, though a thing of the past may need to come back.

Dont you think the Police already have enough on their hands as it is //sarcasicm

RE: importin cars... Oh come on' If ppl can buy flash phones with camera and all that bling then why cant they afford $15 worth of handsfree kit.

Most of the new Nokia's come with it anyways. Not too sure about othr brands.

You cannot have it already installed int eh car because there is not a single standard brand ppl will use, there are literaly 10s - 100s of brands out there..... if you catch my drift.

lets think up slogans for an anti cellphone driving campaign!!

liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 12:27 PM (GMT)
Yes, I see your point but maybe they can make a formatted one so that all mobiles can be used with it.

I can use a handsfree set, I just have to press a couple of buttons in order to so. You don't need a head set, it becomes very much like a radio so I say just have a thing that you can put the cellphone on. You have drink holders so maybe next to the driver needs to be a cellphone holder.

yup.. education is the way to go thumbs up

kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 12:30 PM (GMT)
I have seen a few people be pulled over by cops for texting while driving....... not to sure if they got a ticket but it is possible........ I know you can be fined for smoking a cigarette while driving if the cop doesnt like you....

liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 12:30 PM (GMT)
have a split screen, on one side is a driver who is texting or calling and they crash and are either seriously injured and on the other side you have a person who is using a handsfree set and they don't crash and then it says

"if you don't install your handsfree kit you will potentially get injured and/or kill someone else, all it takes is $XXXXX to make the roads safe. Now compulsory in order to pass WOFs".

You mean speaker phone, yes most of the phones have that now but i guess it will not be "that" private.

Standards.. Bluetooth IEEE 802.1x is "the" standard for this. Its not finalized yet though, as there are more advances in technology , they will add it in.

NOPE... what about the poor fckers who "Dont" use a cell phone or dont even have one.

This is entirely case based. Depends on the idoit behind the wheels. Its the difference between safe driver and a dipshyt.

apprantly that was a success. So yea.

//im outta here.

You have to have one rule for everyone, you can't discriminate when it comes to the law.

AC la - April 2, 2005 12:34 PM (GMT)
Haha..
the split screen thing is sooooo lame though

The best police ad i've found so far is the "Theres a timebomb ticking at intersections" one... where the indicator ticks gets faster and faster... Pretty scary..

Fuck no, that discriminates against females and the older generation. These days everyone uses mobiles, everyone.
