In the wake of King Kong comes... this. Will it be awesome? Or will it just finally break Peter Jackson's luck?

Personally, I can't stand watching the movie of the game. It's like watching someone else play for an hour and a half, and never getting the controller.

the oob - October 5, 2005 05:58 AM (GMT)
Hmmm... on the one hand it's a video game movie, and they always suck, but then PJ is directing it, and his movies are always good.

Adolf Chiang - October 5, 2005 07:03 AM (GMT)
I've never played the game before, so I might not watch it, but I'm tempted that it's going to be another Peter Jackson work. I personally would like to see 'Command & Conquer', 'Call of Duty' or 'Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault' be made into games, but then few people would be able tell the difference between them and the average war movie.

Speaking of MOH, did you know that the series was Spielberg's idea? he probably got sick of war movies after 'Saving Private Ryan'.

the oob - October 5, 2005 07:13 AM (GMT)
Oh wait, apparently PJ is producing, not directing, my bad.

MS was disappointed when he turned the position down. Bill Gates supported the idea of hiring him to direct it.

Oob, since you've been gaming a lot longer than I have, what games do you think should be made into movies? (I'm talking about the ones that haven't.)

I can't think of any which wouldn't suck, but I do likes my alternate history, so I'll go with Red Alert.

Ypu cant be serious? These games had little to no plot. How can u make a movie on a game with no story line and a subject matter of world war two. theres not even a main character with any developement. Maybe you should have randomly thought of other war games people might recognise.

I cant think of two games that would make great movies by story line alone.

the first one is Deus Ex. I have yet to see a movie with a decent augmented government agent in it, we now have the technology to realistically bring JC Denton to life. and everyone loves a conspiracy, specially ones that involve the end of the computer age, or AI demi gods.

The second is Half life. Before you guys groan think about the potential it has. yea we've all seen teleporter movies with aliens, but when has the protagonist been a quantum/nuclear physicist in a powered suit? black mesa, government cover up. It could be good B)

Adolf Chiang - October 5, 2005 07:47 AM (GMT)
RA wouldn't be a good idea since it's actually set in the '40s or '50s and the stuff in actuality wouldn't be that advanced. There'll be computers (but they'll be DOS-like) and the MiGs wouldn't be the MiG-29 Fulcrum model.

I think old C&C is actually a fairly better idea for an RTS game movie since it's so alternative that I once wished that I lived in that world instead of this one. I also think that Kane pwnz!

I would argue that C&C has a plot, as you could make one about an average U.S. citizen struggling through life in the Tiberian age (just like the intro. video of some guy changing random channels and sees all this propaganda crap) and eventually joins GDI or Nod, become either one of Sheppard or Kane's close lieutenants.

They could also make a C&C movie about the mysterious past of Kane since the games have some Biblical hints: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kane_%28Command_%26_Conquer%29

'Far Cry' has only been out for about a year and the movie rights have already been sold (rumors about filming to begin in 2006) and there's also talk of a 'Doom 3' movie. I think games made into movies can work as 'Resident Evil' wasn't too bad.

Fez - October 5, 2005 07:48 AM (GMT)
PJ is Executive Producer

WETA will be onboard

Many an halo fanboy is excited

Im wondering where he will find the time since he has already commited to doing "The Lovely Bones"

El Matador - October 5, 2005 07:51 AM (GMT)
Hmmm. I will be surprised to see this be successful. What would really rock is duke nukem: the movie.

Adolf Chiang - October 5, 2005 07:55 AM (GMT)
A Duke movie would give Schwazzenegger a career revival. I think the Duke's features were modelled on the actor. I bet the Feminazis will protest over the male chauvinist nature of a Duke Nukem movie.

Maliekieth - October 5, 2005 08:03 AM (GMT)
I'm in complete agreement with Senor here. Alot of the games being mentioned as movie candidates are total no-plotters, and would just result in another empty, hollywood action flick.

Deus Ex has great potential to include some good old explosions and action, as well as having a good dose of consipracy theories and suspense. In my opinion, if it was done correctly, would also be one of those movies you sit down afterwards and go "fuck, I need to think about this".

Half-Life has potential, though I'm not totally convinced yet - though I'm sure that will change tomorrow on the train when Senor fills me in on how great it would be.

One I would like to see is Baldurs Gate, but thats because I'm a Baldurs Gate nut.

Senor - October 5, 2005 08:09 AM (GMT)
FUCK! the more i think about it the more cool deus ex movie would be. i cant think of another movie except fight club that deals with economic apocalypse, and the AI demi god in a mobile human entity is just cool. illuminati and majestic 12 is also cool. and secret government agencies fighting each other for funds and technology is also cool.

Adolf Chiang - October 5, 2005 08:18 AM (GMT)
The Brotherhood of Nod in C&C would be full of conspiracy too.

Oooh I'd forgotten about Deus Ex... yeah that one could possibly almost perhaps work. I play mostly RTS and FPS so I can't think of many games with good plots off the top of my head.

I hope the estate of H.G. Wells sues, Far Cry is a rip off of The Island of Dr Moreau, though probably not a blatant enough rip off for them to be successfully sued.

Now for books, Consider Phlebas would be the shiz. I'd fucking love to see the Damage game, with the 'lives' being killed, bahahaha!

Yes.

Maus - October 5, 2005 08:12 PM (GMT)
They should make a movie out of Super Puzzle Figher 2 Turbo.

It'd be the greatest stoner movie of all time.

él_bronto - October 6, 2005 07:45 AM (GMT)
 Maus

John Carmack made a really good comment that even the best game story lines are only B-Movie quality. Personally I think that's just fine.

Good game for a movie? How about star control? It would have to be epic though

templar34 - October 6, 2005 08:11 AM (GMT)
DX'd fucking rock, but it'd be a bitch to sort out.

Doom comes out in a few weeks :P

I'd be keen to see Vampire: Bloodlines (Malkavian anyone :cloak:?), or....There's a game in the pipelines that's meant to be a 1st person Diablo-esque game set in London (Hellgate, IIRC). That could be cool.

Planescape: Torment FTW.

Maus - October 6, 2005 08:40 PM (GMT)
I dunno. I hate computer games with stories. Especially first person shooters.

Something bad happens. The masculine hero is the only person able to save the earth/kill the terrorists/ something equally vapid. It turns out that the person that is helping him is really the bad guy. It all ends in another dimension.

That's it. Every fps since Wolfenstein. So yes, totally b-grade.

Synopsis - October 6, 2005 09:12 PM (GMT)
I hope they have the sense to draw some of their material from the books. The books were pretty good at expanding the Halo storyline.

The game, while quite good (though really badly optimized) was a rip off of Vampire: the Masquerade, and so was the movie Underworld.

templar34 - October 6, 2005 10:17 PM (GMT)
...oob, you do know that the full name of the game is Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines? And that White Wolf had a lot of input in the development?

Underworld was a rip-off, but Bloodlines was official

the oob - October 6, 2005 10:22 PM (GMT)
Oh yeah, I did actually know that but had forgotten. Anyway, you can see the problem they'd have making a movie of it, it would be too similar to Underworld, and it will look like they ripped off Underworld to most people, even though it's the other way around.

Dawn of War may have a similar problem if they introduce Tyranids into the game, I hear Starcraft was originally meant to be based on WH:40k, hence why the Zerg are so similar to the Tyranids. So as before, even though Zerg are a rip off of Tyranids, it will look the other way around to most people.

Maus - October 6, 2005 11:38 PM (GMT)
Dawn of War would be awesome if they introduced Tyranids. Well, it's already awesome, but it would be awesomer still.

Mr Lanky Bobs - October 7, 2005 02:06 AM (GMT)
doom looked cool in the trailer...a lot of the filming is like your in the game where you see the gun at the bottom of the screen...

Steveo - October 7, 2005 05:53 AM (GMT)
I got so excited when i saw the trailor, the g/f got a little freaked out lol

El Matador - October 7, 2005 06:39 AM (GMT)
I maintain a Duke Nukem movie woudl rock. It could answer the age-old question of how Duke can kick with both feet at once AND climb a ladder, all at the same time.

It's not Doom without Mars, Demons and Hell.

samf - October 7, 2005 09:56 AM (GMT)

Heheh. Synopsis, I'm listening to bfm's dance show on live stream right now, and it looks as though your avatar is really getting into it!

This is the last beer of the night.

Synopsis - October 7, 2005 11:13 AM (GMT)
Heh, yeah she does that alot.

Adolf Chiang - October 15, 2005 09:27 PM (GMT)
Apparently the 'Doom' movie is due for release this month.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_%28movie%29

Mr Lanky Bobs - October 18, 2005 12:45 AM (GMT)
yeah it is this month...saw the trailer at the start of into the blue...oct 27 or 28 i think...

Adolf Chiang - October 18, 2005 01:16 AM (GMT)
I'm tempted to watch it.

samf - October 18, 2005 04:59 AM (GMT)

Resist, the uniforms aren't military authentic.

samf - October 26, 2005 05:27 AM (GMT)

Just saw the Doom trailer. It looks completely pointless, just like watching someone else play the game. And you never get the controller.

Neither is the story line. But I generally go watch a kick ass film after my last exam.

Most action movies are pointless, that's why instead of another WWII film, Spielberg created the MOH franchise so that everyone gets involved in the action. I bet 'Doom' will be a promotion for id Software.

samf - October 27, 2005 11:05 PM (GMT)

They could at least have avoided the crappy technique of using the game's "behind the gun" viewpoint in the movie.

Adolf Chiang - October 29, 2005 12:39 AM (GMT)
Whether you like it or not, I'm going to watch it after the exams.
