Its a sad day when someone can't earn $800,000 a year for three hours work five days a week...

err, wait a minute, no its not!

Just as long as they don't import a TV3 personality and pay them $750,000. Come on, just make Wendy Petrie the new Judy Bailey. Just tell people Judy dyed her hair, no one will remember what Bailey looked like in a years time anyway.

Adolf Chiang - October 4, 2005 06:36 PM (GMT)
Since when did anyone titled her the mother of the nation? She's been doing the same job for 18 years, I'm sure she's approaching retirement age, if not beyond it.

the oob - October 4, 2005 06:43 PM (GMT)
It's about time. Female presenters should be fired when they hit 30.

El Matador - October 4, 2005 07:29 PM (GMT)
'Mother of the nation' is a title dreamed up by TVNZ people who fail to realise the world does not revolve around them, hence why they have lost ratings ever since they dropped Richard Long.

Happy Ahmed - October 4, 2005 07:30 PM (GMT)
Firstly, Mr Labour doesn't seem to think people should be entitled to earn money. The job is a very public one and there is far more to it than the hours stated. There is also a lot of competition from private companies which govern the rates of pay. In order to retain the best people you need to offer good wages etc. But perhaps we should just all earn the same and share things.

Secondly, Mr Chiang, she has been referred to as the mother of the nation for years since she has been intrinsic to the informing of the people for so long. Particularly back when One News was the only option. Richard Long's moustache is actually the father of the nation.

Thirdly, motherfucker, I don't believe in a retirement 'age' you should not have to retire until you are unable to do your job. Me, I'm going to be working until I die.

Fourthly, Oob, fuck yeah dawg, *highfive*

Shes certainly entitled to earn money, I don't think she could jusitfy an $800,000 wage. If thats the price it takes to retain her against private companies, she should have been shown the door, so some younger, less established talent (Wendy Petrie) could take her place.

Cambell and Hirshfield over on 3 probably weren't making $800,000 each, and Prime certainly doesn't pay its Australian Chimps $800,000 a year, so its kind of hard to imagine them picking up Judy Bailey for that kind of cash.

Frankly I care about paying our nurses, teachers, doctors, police, armed services and other public servants more before we get to frickin Bailey.

It's justified if having her on board brings in at least that much in advertising revenue, which it may well do. A capitalist society doesn't pay people what you or I might think they deserve, it pays them what they're worth.

samf - October 5, 2005 05:30 AM (GMT)

True. Imagine how much money that 6-7pm TV1 slot is worth for advertising - it might be Bailey's $800,000 wage in a night, if not more...

El Matador - October 5, 2005 05:40 AM (GMT)
I think the real reason behind this is TVNZ wanting to move One News to a a NNN (naked news network) style operation.

samf - October 5, 2005 05:41 AM (GMT)

Needs moar Helen Simpson.

Happy Ahmed - October 5, 2005 06:04 AM (GMT)
Hey i'm single now, i'm free to hatefuck Helen.

Adolf Chiang - October 5, 2005 07:05 AM (GMT)
What the hell happened to Simon Dallow and Allison Mau reading One News?

Happy Ahmed - October 5, 2005 07:57 AM (GMT)
They started boning.

Didn't they?

The main reason she is being fired - a drop in ratings.

Main reason there is a drop in ratings - negative publicity over her massive pay check.

I dunno, I doubt more than a handful of people decided 'Judy Bailey gets paid too much, to protest I am now going to start watching TV3 news'.

él_bronto - October 6, 2005 05:22 AM (GMT)
News readers arent just paid for reading the news, any muppet could do that (even :hambeast: ? )

I'd say it had something to do with Holmes getting ~$1mil from Prime. That probably upset the (small) market for news readers a bit, hence her large pay rise. Since Holmes didn't pull the viewers Prime expected I'd say all the networks have realised that news readers 'brands' aren't quite worth what they were paying for them.

Of course, she could have kept reading the news into her old age...

Mr Lanky Bobs - October 7, 2005 01:13 AM (GMT)
for the money that she is/was on i'd read the news in a chicken suit...

Boy Wonder - October 7, 2005 02:23 AM (GMT)
To read the news you have to appear neutral no matter who or what you are reporting on. A lot of people on this forum couldnt do that.

El Matador - October 7, 2005 09:00 PM (GMT)
I wonder how many more people Ralston will give the nudge before he realises its the quality of the story, not the people that drive the ratings down.

However, if it means more of Pippa Wetzel on screen...then who am I to stand in the way of progress....

Mr Lanky Bobs - October 8, 2005 02:54 AM (GMT)
if they want to boost the ratings get that weather girl from the new deuce bigalow movie...

samf - October 8, 2005 03:00 AM (GMT)

Not the one with the face-curtain thing...

no they have a stripper doing the weather...she strips as she goes over the forecast...

Adolf Chiang - October 9, 2005 10:35 PM (GMT)
You're all missing the point! They should boost news ratings by hiring the cast of 'Facelift' to read the news, with their full make up and voices, of course!

samf - October 10, 2005 04:14 AM (GMT)

I think Jeremy Wells should step in...

Hauser - October 12, 2005 09:21 PM (GMT)
Jeremy Well's would do an awesome job.

I don't know why they don't bring Simon Dallow back to the front of the news: he kicks so much arse.

Alison Mau works for Prime now Chiang, to asnwer your question.

Senor - October 12, 2005 09:24 PM (GMT)
Hhaa jeremy well's "serious" face is classic.

Bring back Darren Macdonald. just pay him in P and eccies.
