Title: Liz And Sports
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 05:41 AM (GMT)
I would rather be doing politics but they've given me sports at Craccum. I'm glad in ways but disappointed that is not my passion, politics and sharing opinions.
So what do you all think I should do?
I am worried about all those dedicated hate fans who disagree with what I have to say and who get riled making Craccum interesting.

Congratulations on getting the job
I say stick with what theyve given you
They already have plenty of "political" and "oppinion" writers so even though its what your passion is, you may not get your stuff printed. Given they have NO ONE to report on sports your'e in with a grin (so long as you dont get off topic and start turning it into a political/oppinion article)
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 06:02 AM (GMT)
so i've been given the job nobody wants, I guess that is a good thing.
Nah I've written my first lot of sports articles and there are not opinions, you wouldn't even know it was written by me, Liz Shaw unless you read the name underneath it.
Its cool coz I never read the sports news but now I have to start. Three cheers to alec and stian. They honestly are cool editors.
I do like a challenge, work can sometimes be a challenge and I get the highest results. You also have to start out somewhere and sports is a start for me.
But if I have a very strong opinion then I am going to have to write in with that as well.
I saw the greg murphy article after sending the sports article so I can't include that in next week's sport but maybe the one after that.
I guess the last political article I sent last week, on Sunday was actually good, that was the speeding one I copied onto this site. I mean previously they had said that I could have 300 wrods on the letters page, a gray spot with Liz Shaw but I guess people just aren't ready for my opinions.
sports news reporting, this is such a cool day.

There is nothing wrong with sports. I would rather read sports articles than politics.
That would be a challenge for you - i guess since sports is not - ur passion.
Make sure you include international sports - ya.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 06:31 AM (GMT)
Well i think you should cover more teams from university as opposed to mainstream sports teams like the blues/warriors etc.....
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 06:34 AM (GMT)
I've already written my first lot of sports information but any comments will be well received.
I did include local and international sports news and didn't just cover rugby.
Yes it is a challenge, not just because its sports but because its merely reporting.
I will make sure that in my second article I include Greg Murphy's comments and I will attempt to put some uni sports news in Craccum, just let me know when there are sports events at uni so I can attend them and do some on site reporting.
Are there any more suggestions for my sports writing?
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 06:57 AM (GMT)
I always like to read a good underdog story like when the blacksocks won the worlds or whatever they did.... I play ice hockey and have for NZ we have to pay for everything........ it really sucks! there have been a lot of special olympics people out collecting money....... i think it would be cool to hear from those guys....... they get a bit of coverage on the news when the games are on but thats it..... im sure they train and stuff all the time like any other athlete does.......
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 07:18 AM (GMT)
I will work on covering the underdog, I will also try and cover the female sports teams too.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 07:24 AM (GMT)
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 07:26 AM (GMT)
and university sports, with the hockey season coming up I will definitely mention that in the sports news.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 07:33 AM (GMT)
what hockey would you be talking about? i know of 3 types of hockey played at uni
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 07:41 AM (GMT)
ice and regular, I didn't know there was a third?
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 07:51 AM (GMT)
inline....... like ice but on roller blades.......
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 07:53 AM (GMT)
sorta like street hockey, that type of thing, I knew I knew the other type, I just couldn't think of what it was.
So what other things are needed in this sports news section?
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 07:58 AM (GMT)
yeah thats the one........... well uni games are coming up and they are in auckland so craccum should really push it to get a lot of people there 2 support our athletes
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 08:03 AM (GMT)
I'm on board with that.
You see the thing about me is that I give people what they want. To be a successful journalist you must go to the people and find out what they want. It is also why John Campbell is so successful. www.tv3.co.nz click on the campbell live link for more information on the programme.
As a matter of interest, have you read my writing in Craccum?
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 08:05 AM (GMT)
I have read a few of ur letters and a few of the responses to your letters always gives me a laugh how some people take one persons opinion and takes soo much offence to it.....
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 08:09 AM (GMT)
tell me about it, its incredible. I really hope the opinion piece I wrote for this week's issue does get published as it was VERY GOOD. It was a very different piece of writing compared to my other stuff. You mgiht say that my writing style has improved. I have had to work on it and eating habits have also helped. Fruit honestly is brain food.
Anyway, speaking of writing pieces. I have to go down and print off a couple of uni assignments.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 08:13 AM (GMT)
that reminds me i should really get started on some assignments.........
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 08:15 AM (GMT)
i have one due at the moment but it is not due until week 12. I am going to get started after doing this printing...if I ever manage to tear myself away from the lappy.
