Title: Holy Shit Folks

samf - September 17, 2005 09:54 AM (GMT)

... A plane just missed the Sky Tower and crashed at St Heliers. Apparently someone threatened an attack on the tower and stole the plane from Ardmore airbase.

More news as it comes - but Jesus Christ dudes! I used to wonder about something like that happening...

Jaded Mandarin - September 17, 2005 10:55 AM (GMT)
Scary shit.

samf - September 17, 2005 11:10 AM (GMT)

It livens up an election night okay, just in case everyone isn't gnawing at their furniture already.

hotshotec - September 17, 2005 01:31 PM (GMT)
It'll be interesting to see how the special votes pan out but everyone has said that usually they dont make any difference at all (part from the Greens).

But i'm glad that Labour is ahead.

Hauser - September 17, 2005 02:12 PM (GMT)
Labour has clearly won. Some coalition that somehow consists of NZ First, United Future, the Maori Party and/or the Greens (plus Jim Anderton) will govern NZ for the next three years!

El Matador - September 17, 2005 04:19 PM (GMT)
Factual corrections. The plan crashed on Kohi beach. I could find no trace of wreckage, police or anything on my way home.

The guy is clearly off his sock and should be neutered. Nuff said.

WE GOT A MENTION ON AL JAZEERA!

Crap, I was hoping that either of the major parties would get enough seats that they wouldn't need the shitty little parties. I guess there was never really much chance of that happening though, now Helen's going to have to babysit those freaks.

Oh yeah, and it would have been cool if that guy had hit the tower.

I concur.

So who do we invade in order to avenge this attack on the liberty of freedom loving New Zealanders?

I blame the Christmas Islands...

with regards to the election outcome, the next government will be pretty fucking unstable. Assuming that NZF will not be in coalition, Labour needs United Future, Greens, Big Jim, and Maori. UF won't want to work with Greens, Maori probly don't want to work with Labour nor UF (and vice versa), everything will be fukt and we'll have another election within a year. Possibly. The end is nigh? I fucking hope so. Down to the motha fukin system

Adolf Chiang - September 18, 2005 03:23 AM (GMT)
My friends and I joked about how the pilot could be a Labour voter who got pissed off at all the predictions of a National victory. As for my own views towards National losing, the Chinese caption in that pic pretty much sums it up:

Bah! Three more years of hell!

No need to be that grim, Aaron. Those parties have a lot in common.

The guy's likely to be insane since he's middle aged and ain't got shit on his criminal record. This is a frightening reminder of what happened three months after 9/11 when high schooler Charles Bishop (who was intending to become a USAF pilot) later expressed sympathy for bin Laden and flew his single engine training plane into a Florida apartment (damage minimal). I think the Sky Tower wouldn't suffer much if it did crash.

Anyway, since it's another Labour victory, I think revelations on the pilot's motives will be more interesting.

If the pilot isn't insane, what sort of charges and sentence will he get?

It has emerged the man who allegedly threatened to crash a light plane into Auckland's Sky Tower last night, is a former instructor at Massey University's flying school.

The man took the Piper Cherokee without authority from the school's base at Ardmore aerodrome, and flew low over the city centre.

A police helicopter shadowed the plane's movements until it eventually crashed into the sea off Kohimarama beach in East Auckland.

Auckland city police communications manager Noreen Hegarty said in a statement to NZPA today that the pilot, who was taken to hospital about 9.40pm last night, was to be interviewed by police today.

He is believed to be in a serious but not critical condition.

The restaurants in Sky Tower had been evacuated as a precaution because of the plane's flight path, police said.

Police are carrying out a criminal investigation in tandem with the Civil Aviation Authority's safety investigation. The aircraft was recovered from Kohimarama Beach this morning when it was put onto a barge and delivered to land-based secure storage where the CAA investigators will continue their work.

Despite early conjecture that the man's actions may have been politically motivated, it is understood the man was emotionally upset over recent relationship difficulties.

He remains in Auckland Hospital with his injuries and under police guard.

Adolf Chiang - September 18, 2005 03:59 AM (GMT)
Flying school instructor?! That just makes it 10x more interesting! Last night's breaking news segments contradicted subsequent reports of whether he missed the Sky Tower by chance. There's also no news on why and how he crashed?

Fez - September 18, 2005 04:01 AM (GMT)
In other news Peter Dunne is a big cock.

QUOTE
Mr Dunne said another issue United Future has made clear, is that it will not support a government that supports the Greens in Cabinet, because he believes the Greens' policies are so far removed from the mainstream of New Zealand society, that they are "dangerous".

"I think they're Luddite in terms of their transport and energy policies. I think their foreign policy verges on being in favour of terrorism and they have never yet found a drug they're not in favour of."

Adolf Chiang - September 18, 2005 04:09 AM (GMT)
Dunne has adopted the old NZ 1st stance of sitting on the fence. If it was a National victory, he'll run towards Brash faster than an Ethiopian with a MacDonald's voucher.

I bet the temptation of being in government will make him join with Labour. If he's indeed the bastion of right in a sea of Red, why didn't he go with the opposition in the last election? If Dunne's party gets rejected by both the Nats and the Reds, he'll feel a lot like an indepedent.

Overall, I think the biggest loser of the election would be Tamahere, as he has to find a job these days.

Unrelated: A whole bunch of gamblers across the Ditch were betting on a National victory. I'm glad I don't gamble!

samf - September 18, 2005 04:51 AM (GMT)

Dunne's going to overcome his scruples and go with Labour and the Greens, as far as I can guess. If Winston breaks the habit of a lifetime and keeps his promises, though, that might not be necessary. Too early to tell...

Adolf Chiang - September 18, 2005 05:28 AM (GMT)
I feel that this government is going to be so similar to the past six years that I'm actually more interested in that guy's terrorist threat on the Sky Tower than the actual coalition.

They should also arrest the woman who wouldn't put out for him.

I suddenly like Peter Dunne a lot more than I used to.

It would be funny if the following scenario happened:

Greens to Labour: You're too far right for us!
United Future to Labour: You're too far left for us!
Labour to UF and Greens: Ok, let's split the difference by staying exactly where we are

Adolf Chiang - September 18, 2005 05:30 AM (GMT)
I always see Dunne as a power whore. If National won, he'll be even happier to go with them, instead of all this pissing and moaning.

The news is going to be on in 1/2 hour, I can't wait to get updated on the crash.

él_bronto - September 18, 2005 05:53 AM (GMT)

It's not like we had, oh I don't know, a figher jet to shoot it down.

Maybe as well as being love-torn he was also making a stinging political comment on the state of our airforce.

It would be nice if we had a fighter jet. You know, just one, so we don't completely suck.

It would be more viable for air defence if we have proper SAMs as opposed to Mistral MANPADS. Missiles cost less require less maintainance.

Why, what were you thinking?

I thought you were making that old joke about Manpads being adult-sized diapers that old folks who can't control their bladders may need to use.

I don't exactly see the new leftist threat as reminescent of the Stalinist style of communist dictatorship, but through the saccharines of degeneracy in what they deem as "progressive", the breakdown of culture, values and decency is looming. I am concerned that our beloved nation shall descent into anarchy where the only law of the land becomes the law of the gun. Having too much of the good stuff is damaging; too much civil rights and there will be no country.

we do, a farmer down south somewhere has an airworthy F-16, but the government won't let him fly it because that would be totally embarassing. I was thinking that they could hire him freelance for emergencies like this one - he could be our Batman!! :helen:

Adolf Chiang - September 18, 2005 11:13 AM (GMT)
By the time it takes for his F-16 to get to Auckland, that crazy pilot would have crashed into the target. The best defense is through indigenous developments as it costs much less than foreign purchases and stir up jealously amongst other nations. It was a pity that the genius named Simpson who built a cruise missile in his backyard with No. 8 fencing wire skills was given a cold shoulder and warning from the government. I personally have doubts about the GPS' guidance ability and what's he got for the TERCOM.
