Title: Shiavo Is Dead
liz_shaw - April 1, 2005 06:10 AM (GMT)
She died this moring at 9:05am.
The family are still feuding over whether or not it was murder or giving her dignity.
The autopsy is still to happen.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 1, 2005 07:05 AM (GMT)
Did anybody just see campbell live? I loved campbell's contrast howthe bush brothers (george W and his bro Jed) were wanting to save Shiavo and how it is best to "air on the side of humanity" but both brothers states who they were govenors in (texas, and florida) both have the death sentence and the fact that george w while govenor of texas executed over 100 people
liz_shaw - April 1, 2005 07:14 AM (GMT)
NO but I am watchng Campbell Live right now and it looks really good and well structured. it has a lot of thought into it.
I give it an A.
Have you seen how a part of stewart island might be sold to the states? I am so against it.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 1, 2005 07:21 AM (GMT)
I bloody love the in your face interviews they have...... although that attack form the guy in the orange did look a little staged..... I say leave stewart island alone and put a runway on top of gore.......been there and it has nothing going for it and a US airforce base would do the little place some good....
liz_shaw - April 1, 2005 09:07 AM (GMT)
I agree about stewart island but disagree about putting anything in the south island.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 1, 2005 09:32 AM (GMT)
I was only joking about the gore part

liz_shaw - April 1, 2005 09:59 AM (GMT)
so very very true I reckon. I can never tell either and thats why people are constantly being misinterpreted by me and why I am constantly being misinterpreted too.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 1, 2005 10:05 AM (GMT)
yes have had many arguments with members of the opposite sex while text messaging.......
liz_shaw - April 1, 2005 10:11 AM (GMT)
really how did that happen?
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 1, 2005 10:19 AM (GMT)
ha ha ha long story but it has happened on many occasions with many females....... but then i turn on my charm :hilarious: :hilarious: :hilarious: :hilarious: then all is sorted......... ha ha ha
Fez - April 1, 2005 10:58 AM (GMT)
I hope she didnt feel too much pain in her final days
I find it kinda sad that she became a household name worldwide because others chose to play god with her life.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 1, 2005 11:01 AM (GMT)
I gotta agree with you on that one Fez, i think she is in a better place now than being in that state........ that is one thing i would not want to happen to me or to wish upon anyone else
liz_shaw - April 1, 2005 11:02 AM (GMT)
apparently she had the mentality of a 4 year old and nobody tried to rehabilitate her.
If this was the case then it was in effect murder because they never even tried to keep her alive and this is so wrong.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 1, 2005 11:06 AM (GMT)
i dont know a lot about the case in hand but 4 year olds can feed themselves... she was using a feeding tube..... that is quite sad that a grown woman can not do what is perhaps 1 of the most important skills in life....... feeding herself...... god cavemen could feed themselves.....
liz_shaw - April 1, 2005 11:12 AM (GMT)
she was comatose for 15 years and nobody tried to rehabilitate her.
This is what I have been told.
yams - April 1, 2005 11:13 AM (GMT)
apparently? if so that changes things a bit. but 4 year olds have a fair amount of cognitive ability.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 1, 2005 11:15 AM (GMT)
she was more than comatose she was PVS (permanent vegatitive state) the only thing her brain could do was breath and small gestures like move mouth slightly from what i gather
yams - April 1, 2005 11:19 AM (GMT)
yea she wasnt comatosed. Comatosed ppl can wake up after a while, but im not sure if theres any way to do this externally, they just seem to wake up on their own accord. Comatosed peoples' brains are usually fairly normal after the ordeal. Terry Shiavo's brain was...not much at all.
liz_shaw - April 1, 2005 11:28 AM (GMT)
I just think they should have kept her alive and tried to rehabilitate her rather than starving her to death.
I believe those reactions were voluntary.
Kelly - April 2, 2005 01:21 AM (GMT)
She had no mentality at all. Her brain was 80% dead and basically only worked to pump her heart and expand and contract her lungs. She had been in that state for 15 years.
The shame in the whole thing is how she got into this state in the first place and that no one is talking about that. She was bullemic (aka throwing up after she ate to "control her weight") and she choked on her own vomit. That cut off oxgen to her brain for too long of a time and thats what killed her brain.
She died of an eating disorder that affects way too many girls/women (espically here in the states) but they dont want to talk about that. The concern of this counrty should be with all the girls out there that are doing what she did/starving themselves so they can keep up with the girls on TV and in magazines. Worry about helping the millions that are alive and need help, not the ONE that is brain dead. Alsa, politicans only care about votes and not people, and the hyprocracy surrounding the whole thing makes me sick.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 03:36 AM (GMT)
Wow thanks for that info..... i never know what had put her into the state she was in............ Should be a real eye opener for people out there.....
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 04:40 AM (GMT)
yep bulimia is not a sensible thing, it fucks with your concentration, it fucks with your energy, it fucks with your metabolism and it can kill you if it gets out of hand.
I once had bulimia and its shocking that someone died from an eating disorder.
however back in 1990 when shiavo did choke, people weren't as aware of the danger of eating disorders now.
I hope everyone can learn something from this, I really really do.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 04:44 AM (GMT)
I dont get bulimia or anorexia and it pisses me off when people call me one of those just because i am underweight! I eat like its going out of fashion! :frustrated: :frustrated: :frustrated:
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 04:53 AM (GMT)
like you don't understand it or you don't suffer from it?
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 04:54 AM (GMT)
just dont understand how people can do that to themselves......... but the mind works in mysterious ways! I dont suffer from it by the way
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 05:05 AM (GMT)
eating disorders are complicated diseases, you start of dieting and then you get caught in a trap that leads you to either starve yourself or to throw up after a meal. One of my friends also suffered one in the past and she is very skinny.
Eating disorders are emotional as well.
I got over mine a couple of years ago but eat to survive only.
So eating disorders never go away, they go into remission.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 05:13 AM (GMT)
yeah i can imagine that once u get stuck in the cycle its haard 2 get out......

Thanks James for setting us straight, I must admit that shed a whole new light on the subject.
PS
James is also an American friend of mine, he went to Auck Uni on an exchange in 2002, played for the uni hockey team in the augural year.

It is hard to get out of it but through strength of character and personality you can get out of it, hopefully.
unfortunately Shiavo didn't.
I didn't realise she choked on the vomit. Its sad really sad.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 05:53 AM (GMT)
yes it is but hopefully people will realise the seriousness of these ilness's and there will be more of an urgency when people are diagnosed with these illness's
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 05:57 AM (GMT)
The problem is that eating disorders carry on in silence, it is often undetected until it is life or death situation.
I'm very verbal so with mine I got treatment but my friend ended up in hospital and got better that way.
There definitely should be more news about eating disorders but having said that, we do have an obesity epidemic. Shiavo was already a small woman so she would have sustained brain damage during the course of the eating disorder, choking was merely the clincher.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 06:02 AM (GMT)
i see.............. NZ is becoming overweight very fast....... i see 4 year olds in prams stuffing their faces with food and i think to myself how it starts so young
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 06:07 AM (GMT)
its because of their parents. The parents have eating habits that they then pass onto their children. For me, I am likely to pass on calorie counting to my children.
I was once on a ferry and it was at christmas time. it was rough and the parents were forcing their kids to eat unhealthy chips, its disgusting. That is why obesity starts.
I personally make sure I eat two pieces of fruit a day.
Canteens at schools are also a problem, sure the food is cheap but in the long run it isn't. I used to be overweight before my eating disorder and the amount of teasing I got was horrendous. It was a partial cause.
This is not good for those young children.
I say everything in moderation and that includes exercise. It includes parents taking responsibility of their children's health and wellbeing and feeing them with healthy food only.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 06:19 AM (GMT)
I eat a lot of food.......... good and bad.... I also play a lot of sport..... last year i was on the ice on average 6 nights a week.......... after watching "supersize me" i do steer clear of maccas etc....... i think people should do that also......... (this talk of food is making me hungry)
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 06:25 AM (GMT)
I totally agree with that.
I think a fat tax is a good idea though and I am usually anti tax.
kiwi_hockey_guy - April 2, 2005 06:41 AM (GMT)
Yeah but some people just have larger body compositions than others and they should not be punnished for their genes
liz_shaw - April 2, 2005 06:45 AM (GMT)
Yes that is true but there are several people who will suffer heart disease as a result of too much fatty food, theya re a burden on the health system which is paid for by the tax payer, they shoudl pay for some of their care or expect to go private.
