Huge profits for a very rare product.
Happy Ahmed - August 21, 2005 05:05 AM (GMT)
Whales are tasty and exploding harpoons are fun.

To give greenpeace a reason to exist.

Isnt the japanese agrument that whales consume more than the entire human food catch a year? and that in antartic waters the minke populations are too many and its having an effect on the plankton levels? adjusting the entire ecosystem

I think the Japanese reason was the Whales have a bigger penis than them.
Hauser - August 21, 2005 12:54 PM (GMT)
Japan's argument is partially about it being 'cultural', as I understand, in that they're 'preserving' a cultural tradition and us filthy gaijin ought to not stop them (They also call their whaling currently 'scientific whaling' that is taking the brains to Japanese universities and selling the meat onwards to restauranteurs).
Commerical whaling could provide vital food to poor isolated island communities too.
Does anyone else here see the total irony in that this is even being asked as an essay question? How about they start asking us to be giving reasons to reinstate serfdom and involuntary servitude, fuck.
'cos I'm Whaling, Out On The Green
I'll Never Get Used To The Sea
But I'm Whaling, Manning My Harpoon
Not Where I Want It To Be
But I'm Whaling, Feel Like Jonah
Never Meaning You No Harm
But I'm Whaling, Next Port Of Call

I don't see what the big deal against whaling is, except for those species of whale which are endangered. Seems more humane to kill larger animals for meat, since you don't have to kill as many of them for the same amount of meat.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were German.

Nein, Ich bin nicht deutsch.

Hmm... whales are large but not very numerous, and therein lies the problem oob. And didn't you say in another thread that compassion was just a limitation on our free will?
*sigh* Now I'm done playing with the troll, I'll say that I'm opposed to practically all whaling except that done on a very small scale by small communities, like Hauser suggests. Many countries have established rights of harvest, such as a couple of whales a year, for cultural or economic reasons.

Hence my 'excluding those which are endangered' qualifier. What I mean is, if a species of whale gets up to reasonable numbers (this, of course, depends on ones definition of 'reasonable' in this context), then no one should have a problem with hunting them, or at least not any more problem than they would have with the hunting of other animals of similar intelligence.

Yes, but there are entirely pragmatic reasons for keeping whales around. For instance:

I have seen that whale (Shamu) perform, and it is the shit.
Hauser - August 22, 2005 12:43 PM (GMT)
Hahaha, are the Shamu an indigenous American people who have embraced capitalism and comercialisation of their culture?

That's why I'm not a whaler.
:quagmire:
